@Syn Gates I need some answers here. I can only speak from some personal experience.

On a more serious note, I never understood Nickelback comparisons. What part of Avenged sounds like Nickelback? That's like saying Linkin Park sounds like Metallica.

I think it's because Nickelback is the generic rock group of the 2000s that made music that anybody can follow. Personally, having been subjected to hours of Nickelback on long car drives, I never got a feeling of soul from them. It always sounded fabricated to sell the rock music industry.

I've seen people say the same about Avenged, pretty early on at that following the White Album. Anybody here on these forums will dispute that for sure.

1. This thread is hilarious.
2. I love Nickelback. And Avenged. And I can kinda understand how people would compare them. Although it's nothing bad in my opinion.
3. LP and Metallica? Nah, Nickelback and Metallica

Can you explain 2.?

The only "similarity" I hear is that the singer in Nickelback has a nasally tone in his voice, but even then it's different to Matt's.

Nickelback doesn't really have any truly metal riffs aside few chugs here and there, and the guitar tone is completely different. I may be wrong here, but I don't think Nickelback has any dueling harmonies either.

Avenged's music is a combustion of 10 different genres of metal, Danny Elfman-esque goth stuff and who knows what the fuck else, and I don't hear any of that in Nickelback. 🤷‍♂️

They both have a kinda nasally tone as you said, both singers have a relatively dark voice but that was not really what I was going after. I personally think they have quite some metal riffs in their library, some pretty low tunings even. Listen to Side of a Bullet, Flat on the Floor, Animals. Sure they are really rockish but they are still pretty hard. (And yes I know you can't compare it to any modern metal, but surely you could compare it to some more classic stuff. Maiden maybe?) Point is. It's not really the music they make, BUT both bands have kinda heavy roots, both bands have a powerfull frontman, have radio friendly songs, are successfull and get quite some hate by stupid people who think they know everything better. And they definetly don't get the credit they deserve.

So what I get from this thread is that my life was a lie. /s

But in all seriousness, as someone who has been learning to sing for the past year, it's extremely common for metal singers to have nasal voices. Just try to sing any Guns'N'Roses song or listen to how nasal Axl's voice is, especially when singing high notes. The trick is to transform that nasal voice from Minnie Mouse to M. Shadows and that is not as easy as it may seem.

That being said, hating on Nickelback is so 2005. I have listened to my fair share of Nickelback because they are a very easy band to consume. But comparing these two bands is...I mean it just shows that objectively, those people do not understand music. Nickelback and Avenged Sevenfold are not similar in what they sing...not by a long shot. But hey, I guess people still haven't moved on from the looks the guys had back in 2001.

I mean, as an F1 fan, people still haven't moved on from Sebastian Vettel hitting his teammate back in 2010, so I can't say I am surprised.

My 2c on the matter :).
