You will use this technique quite a bit in your playing. It’s the foundation of a very important technique called Legato(more on that later), as well as being very useful for ornamentation.
Slash uses a lot of quick hammer ons and pull offs to embellish his playing as well as Brian May of Queen. Check out this part of the solo in
Bohemian Rhapsody. Such great feel and use of ornamentation here.
It is also used widely in neo-classical style guitar in what is called a 'trill'. It can be heard in the Randy Rhoads' solo in
Ozzy's "Revelation" at 5:13 time mark.
Really try and incorporate these tastefully. Listen to rock icons like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Perry, to name a few, for great use of this technique! Transcribe this stuff guys it's not just important to know this, but developing your ear is crucial in being able to create incredible solos of your own!
Does anyone have a video they can upload to the
"Discussion Thread" of them playing an iconic solo of their favorite player? We'd love to watch it and hear how you went about transcribing the solo!!
