Lesson description

This is an advanced lesson. Before watching the video and answering the questions, you might want to brush up on a few concepts outlined in the instructor notes.

Syn's tips

Modes
Modes are scales that are built upon a “parent” scale. In this case, we’re in C dorian which is a mode built off the second degree of Bb Major.. So they are going to share the same Chord Family. A few lessons on this one but lets start at lesson number one!

Minor 9 Arpeggios
Minor 9 arpeggios is just a minor arpeggio (root, minor third, fifth) with the color tone of the 9th degree (or second). Very common in jazz and not too hard to implement in your playing!

Economy Picking
Economy picking is combining the idea of sweep picking and alternate picking. A little tricky to initially implement into your playing if you’re used to just alternate picking but once you start putting some gas to it, it can really elevate your chops!

The CAGED system
The CAGED system is a way to visualize the fretboard and help you see how the whole thing interconnects! There are a few methods out there (CAGED, Three Notes Per Strings, Intervals) each one with their pros/cons but all good to know. Lots of lessons here so let’s get you started with an overview.

Sweep Picking
Sweep Picking is one of those things that seems scary at first but once you get it under your fingers (pun intended), it flows easily. Start learning more here!

Melodic Minor
Melodic minor is one of those scales that will get people saying “What was that?!” Used a lot in jazz and classical music and can add a tasteful element to your playing.

Legato
Legato style can add more texture to your playing. The contrast between articulating picked notes vs. playing them smoothly using hammer ons and pull offs will make you sound wise beyond your years!

Pinch Harmonics
Pinch Harmonics are another type of harmonic you can do on the guitar. This one is done with the thumb that’s holding your pick.

Diminished Scale
Diminished is such a friendly yet evil sounding scale. Friendly in the sense where it’s symmetrical and is fairly easy to execute compared to other scales - but can add a darker element to your playing.
