i think they are Dm, Dm6 or at least its playing the 6th raised (B instead of Bb but don't know how is this chord called) and then he is adding the Dm7 cause he's playing C and then goin back to Dm6 and back to Dm then goes to Em and back to Dm but they are triads so i don't know if am correct
Yeah there are certain rules of which notes you can play together in a chord. If you play a Bb is also a sharp fifth so that clashes a lot when adding it to a triad. The things that show tonality(minor/major) are the thirds.
