Syn's tone on Boss GT-1?
Never really tried, but I would say a high distortion and maybe a compressor, that's all. For The Stage he also used some reverb and delay sometimes.- Nocturne

Hearing rhythms?
I would add a suggestion to you: use Songsterr. Most of the time the tabs are way more accurate and you have the rythm written, and a playback, so you can hear what's going on and play it with a metronome.- Nocturne
