    What you said Frank is such an oversimplification. Both techniques are fine on their own. It really depends on the part that you are playing. If it sounds good with picking or with legatos, you have to decide. you can take Syn’s solos as a rough guideline of where he picks and where he uses legatos.

    Do what is comfortable for you. Experiment with different grips before committing to one. Grips can/can not change over time. It really depends on the individual. My grip is not even close to what it was 4 yrs ago.

    Help with harmonizing guitar parts

    try making a different melody with similar note patters/picking patterns but trying different notes (i mean not all thirds/fifths/fourths). or try to divide the primary solo in parts, write a different harmonizing portion for each part then join those portions to create the harmonizing solo

    Advice for creating solos

    there are so many ways to approach this. I am assuming you have tried some. How about taking sections of the riff, convert them into single line phrases and then stylize them?
