Never mistake art for commerce. They are not always mutually exclusive - but mostly are. Great musicianship often has nothing to do with success or notoriety. Take Satriani, Holdsworth, Malmsteen, etc. NONE of them are even remotely successful compared to your average pop band - or for that...

Chord name? Lil help would be nice

Id's nailed it. Just a plain old A9. Add 9 would not have a b7 in it. As soon as you add the b7 it becomes a dominant chord. I don't know why - but we don't call any chords dominant in their name. A7, A9, A13 - are all dominant. If you change the b7 to a natural 7 or major 7 (in this case a G#)...

Returning to music after a lot of years away

I've been moving across country and haven't touched a guitar in about 6 weeks. Probably as long as I have ever gone without playing in 50 years. I've taken a week or two off, but never this long. Probably won't play for another month or so while we get settled in here. It'll be fun to get back...

Everyone has their own approach. Kurt clearly didn't spend a lot of time on his chops - BUT - he did have some chops and he did know some chords. He didn't create himself in a vacuum. He obviously grew up listening to music and bands, and whether he wanted to admit it or not - he was influenced...

May is one of the most colorful, expressive, inventive, game-changing guitar players on the planet. Transcribe a couple of his solos. They are easy to listen to and hard to play.

It's kind of like getting the same haircut as someone else. The real "character" is in the shape of the face, the features, etc. So yes - you can emulate another player (and that's not a bad thing) - but it will always be filtered through you and end up sounding more like you than them. I'm a...

    Pentatonic scales

Yes. The Major scale is the same as its relative minor and vice versa. So a C Major pent scale can be used over an Am chord and an A minor pent scale can be used over a C Major chord. Make sense?

I believe it was a Godin concert grand acoustic. I know that's what he uses live. Not sure in the studio - but that's my guess.

Papa Gates - Grandma - New (Old) Video

This is a comedy song and video I did from about 10 years ago. It was shelved due to "sensitive" content at the suggestion of my management team. Now that I am no longer signed to management, I thought that now would be a good time to release it. Normally I would never post my comedy stuff on...

Minor Blues & Stormy Monday Changes - Lesson 10

Listen. Listen. Listen. Transcribe solos you like. That's the closest you'll get to getting inside his head. You will start seeing patterns. Where he zigs and where he zags. He's a great guitarist to study - in that he works from melodies and motifs AND he seldom repeats himself.

I want some motivation from all of you guys

Forget "learning" or "getting better" for a few weeks. Just play what you love. Play something that makes you smile. Doesn't matter what it is. We get wrapped up in the bonds of progress and often forget - this is supposed to be fun! Sometimes "fun" to me is working my ass off on something...

Advanced CHORDS THEORY - Lesson 27 - Minor 9th and Minor 9th flat five chords

Great job, Andrei! These lessons are covering areas either not covered in our lessons - or they are helping to explain some concepts that are included in our videos. Either way - you're killing it. I had never seen that inversion of the last chord you posted. You taught me something new! I...
