    Tips on increasing picking speed?

My advice would be: 1. Stick on a Metronome to a comfortable tempo 2. Practice picking on the clicks (quarter notes) then 2 picks per click (8th notes) then 4 picks per click (16th notes) - Make sure than your grip on the pick is super relaxed during the whole thing. 3. Have your wrist move in...

    A Letter To The Students

Welcome back! Yeah, no need for drama at all on here, unless it's a dramatically good solo...In all seriousness though, this site is free of charge! Nobody's out of pocket if they don't get a question answered for whatever reason or if something goes wrong, big deal - especially navigating...

Comment by 'Chris Johnston' in media 'Practicing Sweeps to Not Ready To Die'

Gotcha! the trick to doing it slow is to sit your pick on the string you're about to pick and let it fall onto the next string in the sweep, by doing this you're picking the string you need and going straight onto the next string in one motion - if you let your hand continue it'll do a full...

Sounding great man! one thing I'd work on is when you're sweeping, to treat it as one continuous down stroke, instead of down picking each note in the arpeggio. It's tricky to get but you'll get there

Intermediate Theory Request #3 - Modal Scales

The reason there are different modal names is because they actually represent completely different sounds - when you use different chords from the C Major Key underneath them. So they don't always act strictly as a C Major Scale. Like if you were to play the scale over an Fmajor chord, it would...

    Picking issues

Gotcha man! Yeah I guess it's all about finding that happy medium that keeps your pick able to move but not too much. You'll find it eventually! Also, just read your post further up about your MH - I hope you're doing okay man 🤟

    Picking issues

How tight are you gripping your pick? For alternate & eco picking you'll want quite a light grip on the pick to help it glide and not get stuck 🤟 it should feel pretty effortless eventually if you get that down!

So I was just teaching a private student not to think too much while improvising & I realised that I suffer from the same hesitation in some parts of my improv with 2-5-1's if I start to concentrate too much! I decided to just sit with my guitar and force my fingers to continually play without...
