Lets get some positivity, 2020 sucked but...

Sure this year was collectively the shittiest one in recent history but some positive things have come out of it. Because of the extra time, I have practiced guitar more than I have in years and I'm practicing compulsively for this first time since I was in high school. I also play a lot more...

Is this a good way to practice improvization?

I need to work on my improvisation, the way I used to practice it was basically just play a mix of chords and riffs that sounded good together in a linear fashion. The new approach I'm thinking about taking is to pick a chord progression and play it over and over with either a drum track or a...

my rhythm sucks what can i do

Play individual parts of songs with a metronome, slow it down if you have, like mind-numbingly slow, if that's what it takes. Or just practice riffs or chord progressions with a metronome over and over again, try this with 12 bar blues or other simple things before you increase the complexity. I...

    What's your guitar routine?

I just started following a routine in the last couple of years after just playing for a long time, it has really advanced my advancement considerably. Right now I do technique exercises for about 15 minutes, then I pick one key per day (like A one day, B the next, etc...) I spend 5 minutes...

What are you currently listening to?

I love the diversity of music that gets posted here I've been doing the blues classes and masterclasses so I have been listening to more blues lately. But I can never get away from my roots:

How long have you been playing?

Thanks for the replys. One thing I want to say to everyone that's saying they're learning theory, GO BUY A KEYBOARD. It doesn't have to be good, seriously the little Casio keyboard so many people have as a kid would even work. The way the notes are laid out in sequence on a keyboard makes...

How long have you been playing?

I was just wondering how long most of you had been playing and what's your skill level? I've been playing for over 25 years, I feel that I'm intermediate to advanced in skill. But I've mainly focused on just playing and learning songs and have only just recently started learning about theory and...

    How do you practice?

I usually start out with some exercises fiding notes and focusing on technique. Then I practice scales and improvising looping chord progressions or backing tracks., I've been incorporating Papa Gates' Blues and Blues Master Class in this. Finally, I work on learning songs or riffs, right now...

Anyone know anything about a Mains or 8 - 16 Ohm switch on my vintage Orange OR-80?

Anyone know anything about a Mains or 8 - 16 Ohm switch on my vintage Orange OR-80?

I have an early 70's Orange OR-80 combo amp that sounds like pure rock fury. The only problem is that I can't use it much because of volume issues. Here's my question, it's got a 8-16 Ohm switch on the back that I keep on 8 and a switch that says 'Mains" with settings for 100 110 200 220 that I...

How many until you start to mess up?

How many beers/ drinks can you have before you start losing time with a metronome? For me it's 4, after 4 I can notice myself lagging, so other people can probably notice around 2 or 3. How many for you? Feel free to do your own tests to get an accurate number before posting.

How do you practice using modes?

I usually focus on each mode for about 2 weeks. I take about 20 minutes and practice playing to 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the mode, then I usually improvise over a chord progresson or vamp that I loop or I play over a backing track. I play in a different key every day, so like A one day B the...

I've washed my hands in hot water before for around thirty or so seconds to loosen up my finger joints during the morning and it's worked before

I've heard other people say this too. I don't find that it loosens up my hands too much, I still have to play to warm up. I do notice that washing my hands before I play makes strings last wayyyyy longer though.

I'm just some guy from NJ, but I have developed a foolproof way to learn any instrument.

I've been playing guitar for close to 30 years but I just started playing piano about 1.5 years ago and I came up with this way to learn. I started it with piano but I have also applied it to guitar and I feel it works well at any level. Here's how it works: Step 1: Set a minimum amount of time...

Not too expensive guitar for lower tunings

Ok, hear me out, you don't need a new guitar to do this. Check out the Digitech Drop pedal, it can tune your guitar down in 1/2 steps up to a full octave down. So you can play tuned down without tuning down the whole guitar, at most just drop the low E to D. They run somewhere around $200, I...

    Alternate Picking Exercise 3 – Lesson 41

This is great!!!! It's widely known that Dm is the saddest of all the keys, and there are not enough lessons to truly do this key justice.

Theory question on secondary dominant chords

I watched Rick Beato’s music theory chord video yesterday, and I have a question. I understand that secondary dominant chords are the fifth of the 2-6 chords in a given key. But my major question is: are secondary dom chords always major? I really need to know because I tend to dominate...
