I have the same habit and I can't seem to shake it. It just feels so natural that when I try and deliberately ball my fist, it feels clumsy and I don't want to take the time to cold turkey force it.
I just started maybe a month, month-and-a-half ago and and am just close to being done with all of the beginner modules, much of which has been immensely helpful because I had never had any real training prior and I first picked up a guitar as a teen 20 years ago.

Had a moment last night while practicing combining scales in the same position (The CAGED System, Part 2) when it hit me just how far my alternate picking has come, to the point where it feels natural and unforced. Always great realizing you've made gains.

I’ve found both, as somebody with no prior experience doing this stuff, to be extremely intuitive and enjoyable for a straightforward setup.
first time capturing myself playing on video and syncing it to the audio recording via interface/DAW; tried to see how far i could go in one take and...lol
Finally through the first CAGED series. Still need to get in a lot more reps before moving on to Part II but there was definitely a lot of growth over the past week.
