Anybody know if the tab books are 100% accurate? The stage seems to be quite accurate but the afterlife tab has the most inefficiently transcribed solo with large jumps in the sweeping parts and double picked notes randomly. Does anybody know if they are correct or not? I know the tab book and studio version aren’t exactly the same as how he plays it live but I’m just curious if it’s exactly correct.

I think if I’m not mistaken @jak said they aren’t that accurate. I’d probably just use them as your starting point but then use your own ear and knowledge to work it out if something doesn’t sound right in the book. Watch live videos of syn playing to see his hand placement on the fret board and watch his right hand to see what he’s doing whether it be economy picking, legato or alternate picking.

tab books are never always right. I dont think they even ask the artists how they play them. They make their best guesses too. Syn changes this solo up almost everytime I see him live too, so its hard to really go by how he plays it.

Whenever I learn a song, I always use at least 2 or 3 unique tabs and what I end up learning is almost an amalgamation of the tabs, taking the parts from each to me that are the most accurate to ear. One tab may have Part A correct, while another tab may have Part B correct. So take the two tabs and two parts and you have a fully correct part. As Richard said they’re great starting point but be sure not to take their word as law per se. This could be a great exercise in ear training; taking the tab as a start and making it perfect with your ear.

On more improvised solos, especially fast ones, there are a lot of off notes and phrasing. On a lot of other stuff, I’ve found that while the notes may be right, it’s like it was tabbed out by someone who doesn’t actually play guitar, because the shape and position choices make no sense. I used to sit and rewrite some tab parts right in the book so they laid better under my fingers.
