Shit like this is why I started the #metalminute hashtag on IG. Keeping the emphasis on doing quick hits with no overdubs, coverups, or hundreds of takes to make it perfect. People who do this sort of thing discourage real players of all skill levels and they should be taken out behind the barn and put down. Leon really shows how easy it is to make "pretend" awesome guitar videos. I hadn't thought about some of these ways, but for sure - they all suck. They're all cheating for the sake of cheating.

I have to admit I do take until I think they are 'acceptable' like do take until I don't mess up all over the place but just ocasionally have notes that don't come out as clear as they are supposed to be

I think doing a few takes to get a solid one is fine, but doing this sort of thing, or doing 100 takes until it's perfect is a bit much. For the Metal Minutes, I never do more than 3 complete takes, but that's just my personal philosophy/rule and an arbitrary number.

The studio needs what it needs. Sometimes it's one take - sometimes it a dozen takes. As he said, if it's compositional, I'm all in. Like using auto-tune as an effect. The sound of that "perfect" 1/4 speed guitar has a place IF that's the sonic quality you what you want on your record. But if you're misrepresenting yourself on instagram, then it's simply fraud.
I go the other way. If you watch my lessons, there are no cuts. 5 minutes, 8 minutes - whatever. It's all live. I may have done 2 or 3 takes from start to finish - but I would have felt like I was misrepresenting myself had I used jump cuts every 15 seconds to make everything "perfect". And you can hear it in my playing - warts and all. lol
Thanks for sharing, Ed. I didn't even know people were doing this. It would seem NOTHING is sacred anymore.

I absolutely love this and wasn't even aware that this was a thing. Like seriously. I quite literally now understand why it seems like so many YouTube and Instagram shredders sound so fucking lifeless!! I always say every player I see sounds so dull. When he played it for real, that string noise and pick attack sound is what makes it so sexy!! I can't believe people are stripping that away!! Thank you for this!! I really needed to watch this!

Oh and what about the dose people who record video doing playback ?? I've seen so many idiots who were just 'playing' and the guitar wasn't even amplified ... You have no idea how much this pisses me off. In general, I would say that, as I practice my solos so much, that when I record they look good at the first or second time XD If you look at my videos I dont use any program or another thing to record, I just record with my phone cam. so when you hear my solos, you can hear all my mistakes and failures. I honestly don't worry about my videos being 100% perfect you know? I'm a guitar student and I'm still learning, that's all. (Of course when I play a wrong note, I record again, ok? I think you get it)
