I'm pretty sure I may have a light injury on my index finger from alternate picking wrong. I tend to move my thumb instead of my wrist, pushing my finger in a way it shouldn't move. It's based on a technique I really liked for a while but got too used to. (Circle picking)
I know I have to start paying more attention to this. I'll even upload a video if I can't figure it out myself.

But now my question; What's one of these small things that you found out along the way?
I thought this may be an interesting topic to discuss. It's these simple things that are often overlooked until it's too late.

Hard to describe anything really. Basicly just small things like how to angle the pick, how to efficiently palm mute or get a meaner "sound" out of it. Still working on how to downpick fast without getting tired too fast
I have the same problem with downpicking. There is a song I want to play, Ensiferum - In My Sword I Trust, I don't last halfway. Haha.
    It's a great practice though

I would like to say 1st and foremost that papa is a huge circle picker. When I hung out with him almost everything he did was done with that style and that dude can play lightning fast. It maybe more so though, I'm not sure if circle picking is good for extremely fast alternate picking. I recall him even telling me he probably shouldn't do it as often as he does but he loves it. I couldn't imagine that being Physiologically safe. As far as little injuries go, I have a tendency to hyperstress my rhythm arm. Keep going though I'm sure you'll get it fixed! You're a smart person!

A couple little things for me, hmmm. I can't spend a lot of time doing a strong pinching motion or I get pain. How I avoid this is I hold a pick correctly instead of wrongly. I also try to keep every part of my hand that isn't grabbing a pick very relaxed because there was one day I suddenly got a lot of pain in the side of my hand and had to stop playing. I have no idea what circle picking is. I also make sure I keep my legs, ankles, and feet relaxed. There was one time I played guitar a lot during a week of vacation and didn't realize that I was playing in a position which kept my calf tense. I discovered the problem when I went back to work and I could barely walk across the parking lot because it felt like my tight calf was trying to rip off of my foot/ankle. I also must always be aware of my shoulder and neck posture 'cuz chronic pain from work. However, guitar is better for good posture and avoiding pain than playing video games, which is my other big hobby. Guitar is much healthier.
