$ynnners!

I stumbled upon this Jared Dines video where he guesses the time people have been playing by a short video and wow....
Let me just say that...I feel good. Becoming good at this instrument is gonna take a lot of time to become good at this instrument. Of course each and everyone here has a different tempo and is gonna become advanced at their pace but....for all beginners out there (that includes me too). Do not get frustrated!
It will take around 10 years to get advanced. I've been playing for 3&1/2 years now...of course I wont be a shredd god yet....but in 6 more years I betcha I will. Patience is really needed with this. But we do it cause we love it.
ALSO enjoy the journey, celebrate your wins and HAVE FUN!

Here is the video for anybody to check out:

Anyways, have a good one fam!

I've been playing for about 10 years but wouldn't know whether I'm good/advanced or not.

Yes he did. I think he said something along the lines of 'until recently I was still a beginner but right now I'm just about intermediate' that's not an exact quote but it was something along those lines and most importantly incredibly humble which was really cool.

Also just watched the video. Didn't think I would like it but it actually is inspiring. Everybody has a different approach like you said and I think it's really hard to judge how "good" someone is.

An Example? I can rip through some metal riffs and do some mean palm muting but watch me play the CAGED system and you might think I picked up the guitar 1/2 year ago. I do have 5 years on my back now.

If he was beginner until recently, I'm a beginner minus infinity.

Don't be discouraged by Syn. In part, he's just being humble, but he's also acknowledging that he will always be a student of guitar, always working to get better and be better. It is certainly not to suggest that anyone not as his level is full-on "beginner," and I *absolutely* know he did not mean it to diminish or discourage ANYONE.

We are all lifelong students. And if we are tackling something new, then we ARE "beginners" in a sense. I think that's what Syn meant. He is certainly not a beginner when it comes to metal and he is not a beginner when it comes to technique , but as he started to pursue jazz - I think he realized that he had a long way to go to get where he wanted to be. (And he's killing it now)
So to answer your question - it comes down to your dedication and your natural talent. I know guys who have worked sooo much harder than me for many years and can't play nearly as well as I can. And I know guys who have played a lot less than me who kick my ass. That's the "God given" part.
So assuming you have some musical talent and you practice a lot - I would say you should be a solid player in 5 years and great in 10.
