I will chime in here and say when I recorded the outro on Angels, Syn had just recorded a solo. He handed me his guitar, still plugged into his amp. Same set up. Didn’t change a thing. I started playing and he looked at me like – “How in the hell are you getting that sound to come out of my guitar and amp?” If you listen to that outro solo – it sounds nothing like Syn. Of course the style and note choices are different – but the TONE is completely different. I couldn’t sound like Syn if I wanted to. My hands don’t do that.
So my advice would be to work on Syn’s techniques; the way he holds the pick, the way he mutes strings, his vibrato, etc. These are the things that will get you closer to his sound. And in end – you don’t want to sound exactly like him anyway. You want to sound like you. Take what you can from Syn and apply it to your style. Someday kids will be asking how they can sound like you!
Good luck!
Cheers!
