Is it even possible to do a whole step bend on the D string?

If you try and bend the D string upwards then the string will go off the fretboard. I don’t know if it’s just me but it seems like you would need titanium fingers to do a whole step bend on the D string by bending it downwards. Is it even practical?

Practical and necessary. I’ll pull the low E 1-1/2 steps sharp sometimes.
But there’s a trick to it.
Use the meat of your palm against the fretboard as leverage. That way, it’s just like you’re trying to squeeze something. Don’t try to do it with just one finger, at least not at first. Minimum two fingers; three if you can. Pull/squeeze.
Yes, it will hurt those fingertips at first. That’s why we keep doing it. Builds callouses, and callouses make playing easier.
    Good luck, Ben!

Not sure how long it would take to relearn this tip…but a general rule of thumb when bending is to bend the low e,a, and d towards the floor..and the g b and high e towards the ceiling. Not everyone does this but it’s the way to go!

Yes it is completely do-able, try bending strings into the middle of the fretboard. Ie, if you are bending the highest strings, bend them towards you and if you are bending the lowest strings, bend them towards the ground, other than that it is just strength.

I do it a lot, bend the note towards the floor, and even use multiple fingers for the bend. One of the greatest things I learned from my first guitar teacher is using multiple fingers for bends. For example, if I want to bend the 7th fret on the D string, I’ll use my ring finger for holding the note andI’ll put my middle finger on the 6th fret behind the note I’m playing, and use both fingers to pull for the bend. This makes these kinds of bends sooo much easier.
