Make Mistakes to Grow and Create Great Solos

Recently I have started making guitar backing tracks. So today, for some reason, I felt like jamming with my own backing track. Something I regret not doing more often. I just hit the record button and improvised non stop. The thing is, I made loads of mistakes, slips etc. I was playing patterns familiar to me. But also I was trying to find different notes, licks to incorporate while playing. At the end of this 10 min stupidity, I at least knew 2-3 more licks that work/don’t work. I just want to encourage everyone to try wrong notes, wrong licks to find the right ones. It will really help getting out of the rut of your own licks. There are so many players in this forum who are 100 times more skilled and knowledgeable than I am. This is for them as well. Push your limits of composition and thinking. Do not ever think you do not have new licks, solos to come up with. ( I am not a good writer but you get the point basically). Here is me, 10 minute non sense on my guitar.

Brilliant advice! You MUST allow yourself to make mistakes to grow. When I am practicing – ANYTHING GOES! That means that I will hit a ton of clams in the hopes of discovering some new territory. When I’m on a gig, I dial it back to 90% so I’m sure not to hit any really wrong notes. If it is a gig (like a TV show) where it has to be perfect, I make sure that I am playing well within my ability – maybe 75% of my ability.
Sometimes mistakes lead you to some amazing places!

I believe Everyone should read this on the school! You make so many amazing points. I think it’s best for us to showcase our flaws just as much as it is for us to showcase our improvements and perfections. I’ve been recently uploading a lot more videos even if I flub a Part. There is way too much pressure on society for perfection. Thank you so much for this! I am loving your backing tracks by the way!

Thanks everyone. Hopefully more guitarists in this forum start experimenting more and showcase their skills and flaws with equal confidence. I am eager to see what people come up with once they hit record and just let it go. (Of course not on the stage/TV, I made some mistakes on stage in this way earlier, Papa Gates)
