I know I have been posting a lot lately but there are good reasons why. I was reading a magazine, Metal Hammer magazine to be honest, and it’s a magazine I bought last year but never had a chance to read yet. I’m starting to find music magazines far more inspirational and informative than online bullshit. But I read this specific clip where Papa Gates talks about Syn as a young guitarist and I thought everybody should hear it. I’m going to paraphrase it. It basically says that even though Syn had a lot of guts and drive, he didn’t practice very much even in his high school years. It wasn’t until he tried to get a band with Jimmy that everything changed. Jimmy was a monster as a preteen boy, and in order for Syn to be able to play with him, Jimmy straight up told him “then you have to get your s*** together and take it seriously.”
This was music to my ears. Too often, I felt like people had to start at age 8 and play for 8 hours A-day to finally become something good when they were 25. But if you think about when the City of Evil album came out and Syn was already known as a guitar God then. Think about the time span between being in high school and city of evil. I wanted to share this with beginners to let you know that if you take it seriously, even our role model himself is living proof that it can be done in a lot less of a timeframe than you may think. It takes the right amount of Passion and dedication. And for those of you who have been playing for a long time but aren’t really quite happy with where you are at, perhaps this may motivate you to think that a more focused practice may deliver extreme improvements in little time. It made me so happy to know that Syn wasn’t one of those players that was just automatically gifted and started playing at age 8 and invested 10 hours a day into it in order to be that good. I think we all would feel a little down about starting later. But this is proof that if you work hard big things can happen. I just wanted to share that with everyone because it really put a lot of my fears and worries to rest. Also that it’s completely normal to feel lazy from time to time but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the passion or the ability to become fucking awesome.
Goodnight/good morning, everyone
