Papa Gates Speaks About Syn As A Young Guitarist (INSPIRATION OVERLOAD)

I know I have been posting a lot lately but there are good reasons why. I was reading a magazine, Metal Hammer magazine to be honest, and it’s a magazine I bought last year but never had a chance to read yet. I’m starting to find music magazines far more inspirational and informative than online bullshit. But I read this specific clip where Papa Gates talks about Syn as a young guitarist and I thought everybody should hear it. I’m going to paraphrase it. It basically says that even though Syn had a lot of guts and drive, he didn’t practice very much even in his high school years. It wasn’t until he tried to get a band with Jimmy that everything changed. Jimmy was a monster as a preteen boy, and in order for Syn to be able to play with him, Jimmy straight up told him “then you have to get your s*** together and take it seriously.”
This was music to my ears. Too often, I felt like people had to start at age 8 and play for 8 hours A-day to finally become something good when they were 25. But if you think about when the City of Evil album came out and Syn was already known as a guitar God then. Think about the time span between being in high school and city of evil. I wanted to share this with beginners to let you know that if you take it seriously, even our role model himself is living proof that it can be done in a lot less of a timeframe than you may think. It takes the right amount of Passion and dedication. And for those of you who have been playing for a long time but aren’t really quite happy with where you are at, perhaps this may motivate you to think that a more focused practice may deliver extreme improvements in little time. It made me so happy to know that Syn wasn’t one of those players that was just automatically gifted and started playing at age 8 and invested 10 hours a day into it in order to be that good. I think we all would feel a little down about starting later. But this is proof that if you work hard big things can happen. I just wanted to share that with everyone because it really put a lot of my fears and worries to rest. Also that it’s completely normal to feel lazy from time to time but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the passion or the ability to become fucking awesome.
Goodnight/good morning, everyone 🤗

Yeah in his recent video with Rick Beato he said he put down the guitar for about four or five years in high school because his friends had a car and he had a car. Honestly I was just shocked and blown away, and I might be looking at it from the wrong angle but I got kinda discouraged because I play every chance I get and still I’m nowhere near his level of playing and musicianship. People tell me I’m always my own worst critic but I don’t really know, I’m just gonna keep trying to get there.

@isaac keep in mind you didn’t have a papa gates at your disposal to teach you proficient technique from the very beginning. Growing up in a musical family really helps tremendously. I can account for that. Not to mention, he was already in a band and doing stuff that involved music right from the get-go. Playing in your bedroom doesn’t help your musicality at all. The more apt you are to writing songs and expressing yourself the better you will become.
I’m not discrediting covers at all as everyone has to start somewhere and they really do help you understand how songs are structured and written. But you have this school now! Which is everything that Syn started off with 🙂 so now that you have the tools under your belt, go bust your ass off and give us the next City of Evil album!

Isaac-Yes I believe in natural talent! But the way I see it is that natural talent only really shows in how easily a person will pick up things. It does not say anything about whether or not you will be able to do something it just might take you more practice to be able to do it than someone else. The fact that someone can do something at a similar level as you with less time kinda shows he may have some more natural talent.

Thanks guys, I guess Syn probably did have a really good start based off where he came from. He had the Rev riding him to get better XD and Papa Gates. I hope I’m apart of something like City Of Evil one day, I freaking love MIA! I know someone from the internet who lives in the next town over who also plays and stuff too and we’re both going to the same college so hopefully we can get a full band put together then! It’s kind of cool because he’s more into like punk rhythm stuff and I’m more into lead stuff kinda like Syn and Zacky, I’m the lefty though not him XD.
