I agree with Ids, especially on A7X stuff. The rhythm stuff seems right, and the leads, while note-correct, often seem like really awkward fingerings.
When Trivium did a Hal Leonard book, I tweeted at Matt and Corey asking if they contributed, and Corey confirmed that he, at least, worked very closely with the transcriber. That was their individual case, of course, but that let me know that HL at least TRIES to work with the artist.
I can say that the Hal Leonard books for Avenged Sevenfold leads have some serious things they get wrong. Not just with fingering but on some things they leave notes out completely. For examples…
Scream solo sixlets are the wrong fingerings.
Scream pre-chorus leaves out a chord and rhythmic nuances.
Hail to the King three string sweeps are wrong fingering and notes. The section after that leaves out about three notes and the rhythmic notation for the lead is wrong.
They are great if you’re needing a place to start or for reference, but I prefer trying to figure it out by ear or video. But if you’re newer to guitar that may be difficult.
