I think Nightmare has the deepest gut punch, because of what they were working through, and where they were going. It's a Grail album for those reasons, but in most every other way, I consider The Stage to be their finest collective work. They took a LOT of stylistic, performance, and production chances on that album, and they all paid off. It's also sonically gorgeous. I love the busy and inventive drumwork and the arrangements, and some of the tones Syn and Zack got here (looking at you, Roman Sky, but not ONLY you...) are just otherworldly. Lyrically it hits my happy receptors too, and I'm generally not a lyrics guy AT ALL.

BUT, I will say - it is all subjective, and it's a testament to the creativity, ingenuity, and diversity of the band that there is not one definitive "best album" for the majority of the fanbase like there are with so many other bands. And THAT is #THETRUTH.

I love The Stage and thought that album and Hail to the King should be i there too. The Stage is just fucking genius, from the keyboard sounds that Jason Freeze done in the opening of The Stage to the guitars, drums, lyrics, EVERYTHING, is just genius IMO and is definitely some of their finest work and I'm sure they're proud of it.

As for Hail to the King. It's just right in your face all the way through, from the powerful drums to shreding solos and strong lyrics.

Nightmare deserves it also as it just spoke emotion, everything came from the heart and nothing was left on the table. The drums were mental and everything was so creative, strong and dark. Lately I've been listening to Save Me and Fiction alot, and they are just masterpeieces!

But each to their own, but thats my opinion!

Suirprisingly, I couldn't get into Hail to the King, the title song is pretty good but everything else on the album for me was meh, everyone to their own opinion though. I really like the stage though.

Honestly, I couldn't, either. I think each of the songs is really strong on their own merits, and if I'm shuffling A7X and anything from HttK comes on, I listen and enjoy, but even though I'm an album-oriented listener, I never listen to that album - and I do every other one from City of Evil onward.

I want the songs to be there, but they just feel like typical Avenged songs.

I think Nightmare and The Stage are comparable in the sense that the front half is loaded with heavier, up-tempo songs, and the second half is more mellow and mid-tempo with a long, progressive ending track. With that being said, I think Nightmare does the job better. The heavier parts are heavier, and also I prefer the solos and harmonies on it as opposed to the ones on The Stage. I also think Matt's voice was better on Nightmare.

So imo, I think placing Nightmare was fair. HTTK probably couldn't get in because of the rip-off accusations haha.
