Proud of myself..

I was training the fast sweep-part of the Nightmare solo and while I was noodling I came up with this pattern by ear and guessing, which I then started to practice with a metronome. Took probably an hour or so to get it to that stage but I feel like I'm proud of myself because this was the first time I've basically "written" anything.

Feel free to tell me what do you think about it and you can comment on my playing too.

Hyvaa!! I think you are doing great! My only question is with your picking hand. Are you letting the pick just collapse and rest on the next string or are you still kind of controlling your picking hand and essentially down picking the strings? It looks like you still have too much control over your picking hand and not letting it relax and drop to the next string enough. It still looks very light and not very heavy. Does that make sense? Excellent creation by the way! I loved it and great job for practicing with a metronome!

dang i never looked at it like that, but how would you recommend the upstroke side of the sweep? Definitely needed to see that im going to give it a try!

It's the same concept just in the opposite direction you don't want to "up pick" everything because that action involves a "movement-stop-movement". Sweeping however is done for speed and a fluid sound. So you want just a constant "movement" action by dragging your pick upward. Instead of letting your pick drop to each string, you let it lift to each string without the interruption of the pause of action that comes with basic up picking does that make sense?

This I'd also something I'm trying to avoid while going down. Coming back is easy cause dragging your wrist is a joke. The push is a different story.

Damn dude idk what was wrong with me, the push was super easy for me but i was still having trouble with the up stroke

Thanks Jak! I'd say both I don't know why but it's harder for me to sweep if I'm going slow. I really need to focus on letting the pick drop to the next string. Probably didn't help that I just made little changes to the pattern before I hit the record button because I really had to focus to hitting the right notes.

I'm gonna take your advice and try to relax my picking hand more next time though. I also might record my progress and post it here. Thanks

Yeah I found sweeping back up the strings is a joke. Pushing I need more wrist control. It's the exact opposite of shredding. Where I can ascend but not descend well.

Feel free to try alternate picking it until your left hand gets really comfortable with it and then bring in the sweeping. You didn't stay in time with the metronome but I don't blame you for that, I blame the boring slow clicks. It is much easier to stay in time with a drum track. Try this and see if you like it- if it's not to your taste no worries, there are countless other choices on youtube.

Yeah. I had to focus too much to the notes and sometimes I have a hard time hearing the metronome.

I will definitely give it a try. Somehow I never even thought about using s drum track Thanks for the tip!
