It's one of my favorite riffs, I learned it early on but always practice it. You husbands arms will stop hurting eventually. It's possible he's trying to keep up the pace of the song and slightly overdoing some motions. He'll get it for sure, just remember the notes, timing, keep at it and not only that cause it gets frustrating getting stuck. Don't let him dig down with his picking shoulder, it'll hurt more. Learning that the hard way
I started practicing it with an upstroke as well, for sure not as fast as the down.

The first riff is Beat It ( I think ) I just learned to add the natural harmonics in this clip
