  • Hey everyone, new to the school but not new to guitar. Been playing 10 years now and after watching Papa Gates' video on how to properly hold the guitar pick, i realized i have been playing with my fingers outstretched rather then in a fist like he explains. I have been practicing the fist clenching technique since yesterday and am finally to the point to where i can decently strum with it. But i play a lot of metal and use a lot of palm muting chugging in my playing and am having problems finding the sweet spot to palm mute when using the clenched fist picking approach. Should i go back to 3 fingers outstretched picking while i palm mute or just stick to the close fist picking approach and eventually it will work itself out?

I have the same habit and I can't seem to shake it. It just feels so natural that when I try and deliberately ball my fist, it feels clumsy and I don't want to take the time to cold turkey force it.

Palm muting is a special occasion. I usually mostly use my pinky when I palm mute. Generally it looks like this
