    Micing Acoustic Guitars

For sure. It really depends on the qualities of the instrument as well. Paired mics are great for mixing regional qualities of the instrument but those are mostly beyond a home budget, haha. I feel like omni would be detrimental though unless you have a well conditioned room. But for capturing...

    Micing Acoustic Guitars

Hey fellow Synners, I got a question more directed towards the fellow sound engineer-minded among us but I’d love everyone’s thoughts. When you’re micing an acoustic guitar, what’s your go-to setup? It’s definitely a hot topic as to what pickup pattern/mic model/direction/distance is best for...

How do I play faster leads

I’ve been doing the same speed exercise for a year. Guitar is a good lesson in patience. Just about everything takes time, and a lot of it. But that’s what makes the achievement so great. If you’re not noticing any speed gain, just keep working at it. Eventually you’ll begin to see results...

    Help with Audio Interface

Scarlett Solo for sure. It’s limited because of the price (anything will be) but I have a Scarlett 2i2 (upgrade from the Solo) and anything Focusrite puts out will be great. It’s plug and play, very easy setup, comes with some free software, and has wonderful onboard controls.

More Advice Needed. Trying To Be A Jack Of All Trades.

The full saying is “Jack of all trades, master of none, but better than a master of one”. I say go for it, they will all have their own influence on your personal style. I like to learn multiple styles but I prioritize based on which I simply like the best.

Always makes me laugh when people take shots at line 6

Line 6 amps are alright, I’d take Orange personally, but there’s a massive price difference… Helix is where Line 6 shines. I’d love one of those one day as a gigging setup and having pedals at home. Or just use it for both.

    Help on Equalizing

The hiss comes from the high end. You can carve that out as needed and it’ll make the tone more emphasized on the midrange. If you take out the low end below a certain point, you can make the overall signal sound cleaner as well. If you go for Zacky’s tone, there’s a very decent amount of...

Is playing on multiple style guitars counterproductive?

I have four different guitars and all four of them feel very different, almost none of them share a commonality. I try to play all four consistently because I feel like it increases my personal versatility. When I learn a piece of music, I’ll get it up so I can play it on all four of my guitars...

How much do looks matter to you?

For me it’s important within reason. I’m not super picky on color but I tend to stay away from the color red. I’m not entirely sure why but I just don’t like it. As far as the shape, no Epiphone Nighthawk’s, and nothing cosmetic that gets in the way of fret access. I’m borderline too picky when...

    Struggling with barre chords

I can’t personally assist with the small hands part but I find barre chords significantly easier when I barre with the side of my first finger and not the fleshy part. Not *fully* to the side, but about halfway between the side and the fleshy part. Aside from that it’s a lot of endurance work. I...

    Ask Papa Gates.

Do you (or Syn) ever regularly play extended range guitars? Additionally do you think there will be a lesson made sometime on how scales and scale shapes extend onto a 7 and 8 string guitar?

Drop D or E standard for guitar theory?

It’s not too hard to learn the fretboard in Drop D, it’s only one string to compensate for. Just remember to shift the notes on that string down by two frets when going back to E standard.

I think we should be more open about music in general

This convo is a bit past relevant but I didn’t get around to reading it until today. I’d say everybody here is correct to a point. I definitely understand Daniel’s analogy in the prior post and I would agree with it. I would feel kinda let down at first if a band suddenly switched up their...

    Exchanging Picks

I have my favorites but usually retiring a pick for me means I lost it. I have about 150 of them in my guitar case and they just kind of accumulate lol. Every time I go to guitar center I’ll pick up a pack no matter what and so I’ve got a little bit of everything. Most interesting I’ve picked up...
