    Finger Exerciser

I own one, I use it on and off, the only real benefit I’ve noticed is endurance, specifically in my thumb from using it as a thumb exerciser. Beyond a certain point you don’t need a ton of raw power strength in your fingers, cuz if you press *too* hard on a string you’re gonna make the note...

    Share Your Breakthroughs and Achievements!

I’ve definitely noticed an increase in my picking and theory knowledge from this site, which are the two things I lacked in most. My pick synchro sucked prior to this site and after going through a few of the picking lessons I’m definitely seeing an improvement. I also am very excited about the...

    String Recommendation

I’ve always used Ernie Ball, tried Elixirs, tried D’Addario, just didn’t quite click. I put Slinkys on my guitars I use less often and the new Paradigm set on my more heavily used guitar, but that’s mainly because the big one in question has a Floyd so I don’t change it as often, so I’m more...

    Relative Pitch

Man, hearing about perfect pitch makes me jealous, haha. Thanks for the reference, I’ll definitely be checking it out.

    Relative Pitch

That’s the analogy I heard as well, haha. I think we may have a mutual source for hearing about relative pitch. So from what I gather then, practicing relative pitch may just be like practicing a language: hearing a passage of notes and then attempting to repeat it.

    Relative Pitch

Hey fellas, I have a bit more of a theory-loaded question here. Recently I’d learned about the topic of Relative Pitch, which I don’t know a lot about. So I was wondering if some of the folks who are more familiar with the concept could give me some advice or gear me towards methods or...

Seven string on next A7X album

I’d love to see the next album take at least one song that blends their post hardcore sounds in Waking The Fallen with the progressive sounds in The Stage. I’d probably never stop listening to it.

    Need advice for new guitar!

I own a Les Paul and played extensively the Solo series by Schecter, and I vastly prefer the Solo series LP shape from Schecter over the actual Les Paul. The neck on the Solo is very nice, and especially if you’re looking at Epiphone, the Solo probably has better fret work, etc. If I were buying...

What are the characteristics of a good guitarist?

I think knowing what not to play is just as important as what to play. If you’re playing with a song, you ought to work around the song dynamics, or if you’re solo, you gotta create the song dynamics. Shredding is fun for awhile but it doesn’t make a song (See: Jackie Vincent (sorry)). So I...

    An idea

Yeah I think if we make it a recognizable song everyone’s just gonna play a part of that song. Which could work, but I think improv really gets down to the person’s skill. But don’t let me take the project away, I’m just voicing. Do whatever you like and I’ll be happy to participate.

    An idea

Someone would need to make a backing track with all the instruments except our guitar parts, everyone would sign up for a certain period of time in the backing track (like 0:30-0:50) and then record us playing over that, then the person assembling it can see where it’s supposed to go because...

    An idea

I’d totally be down! It would be a great showcase of skills on this site to get everyone from beginners to experts playing a little something.

    Picking Problems… HELP!

I don’t usually hold the pick like that when I strum, usually whenever I play rhythm I change my grip to where I hold the pick with thumb, 1st, and 2nd fingers. During my more formative years I played a hybrid of rhythm and lead guitar with my youth group (covering both parts) so over time I...

How does everyone else play power chords?

I used to have a high school buddy who played two-finger power chords with his first and second fingers. I don’t think he did it past his first few months of playing but it was pretty impressive honestly. I myself have always played 1st 3rd and 4th.

    Favorite Distortion Pedal(s)?

I have an Orange 35 watt solid state amp. I currently live in a college dorm so getting a head/cab setup isn’t exactly within the realm of possibility, unfortunately.

    Favorite Distortion Pedal(s)?

Hey fellas, I’m having some tone issues. For years now I’ve used two overdrives stacked in order to make a distortion tone, and by all means it’s pretty good, but sometimes it’s just not all there. So I’m thinking maybe I’ll invest in a good distortion pedal. I’ve tried a few now, but I’d like...

    Signature Guitars

None currently, but I’d looooooooove to get my hands on one of those Mark Holcomb signature PRS models. I got the chance to play one and it was love at first note.

    Fearr

It helps me to forget there’s a camera there at all, and have the mentality that I’m simply playing along with the song I like, and if I play great, then cool. If not, then cool, I’ll start it over and try it again. That’s the beauty of the camera: you can try more than once. You can do it over...

What pick size you guys prefer ?

Anywhere between 1 and 3mm. Meaning I mostly own 2mm. I have giant hands so that’s part of the reason, and I like that they don’t make the snapping sound you get with thinner picks.

    Guitar Advice Needed on Technique

I always bend with my ring finer out of habit and preference. I don’t think it’s ever been detractive. As with anything I’m sure it’s all in the practice you put in.
