I’m a junior in high school and I’ve been fortunate enough to have an introductory course offered here. I’ve had a semester with the teacher before for music technology, which was working with a digital audio workstation, and he’s awesome. In the guitar class itself, there’s people with pretty diverse guitar backgrounds, some go to classes, some are really experienced, and some are new beginners, just like I was. I’ve had a great time in the class. We’re almost done with the book the school year as well, and there’s so much I want to learn but because this is an introductory course, and he won’t be able to set up an advanced class for next year, I won’t be able to learn all the cool stuff I wanted to. That’s why I signed up for Syn’s guitar class.

Great to see you keep pushing. My advice here is do every lesson. Even if you already know it from the Introductory course. Pg and syn have some amazing tips at helping you see the patterns between the patterns. Some really big points in every lesson.

Theres 2 regrets in the directions of my life that I wish was different. All out of my control.
One was grade 7 my parents made me to vocals over strings which vocals wasnt even real we just sang green day lol. Imagine the theory I would have already knew going into guitar.
Second one is getting into rock and metal too late in high school for the music class.

I have kind of a similar sentiment…In high school I was in marching band, I played trumpet…I absolutely SUCKED at playing trumpet, not that I put much effort into it though, basically I hated it, at the time…and I quit after only a year, but later on in life, I realized just how valuable the things I learned really were.
The first song we did as a marching band was in 7/8, and we had to learn how to march in 7/8 time…it was not easy…later on when I started writing music I would always come up with these weird time signature riffs, and finally one day a friend (who was also in band with me back then) said “it’s just like marching band” and then it clicked in my head — clearly it had a huge influence on me, and I wish I would’ve stuck with it for the whole four years.
But yeah, theory wise, I played trumpet from 3rd grade to 12th, and even the theory stuff there that I learned was great…but marching band, that’s the stuff that mostly applies today, it was all crazy changes and crazy rhythms, and basically learned the whole head pat and stomach circle at the same time…marching in super strange time signatures that change every minute AND playing your instrument is not an easy thing to do….memorizing the choreography, the music, and keeping lock step marching with the rest of the band…extremely difficult.

I started to write out my own song for this end of year project for the class. I have all these ideas for how I want it to sound. I’m constantly taking notes, thinking, researching scales that I could use, theory, even picking styles. Anything to help develop sound. I do think I save too many pedals, though…
