JOIN THE DISCORD VIEW THREADOk cool thanks!I am far from an expert on the technique but when you speed up check that your muting is keeping up with the rest of your playing.
That’s exactly what I’ve been doing and it’s good to know I was practicing right! I’ve been working an a small part of a children of Bodom solo it’s only a 3 string sweep and I can comfortable do it at 150 bpm but can’t seem to get it any quicker. I’m thinking it’s maybe the way I’m fretting the notes or holding the guitar cuz I feel my muting is pretty goodThis is coming from someone who hasn't worked on my sweep picking for a bit and never really got far with it so take it with a grain of salt. It sounds like you aren't muting properly. Best method is to probably keep going at the comfortable max speed that you can do it without performing a pull off on accident for a bit and just slowly bump up the speed. 5-10bpm increments so it isn't noticeably more difficult and to use one of Syns Sweep Etudes. Start out slow and bump it up 5bpm. Are you comfortable with that speed? Bump it up 5 more. Continue that until it gets noticeably harder and you aren't correctly performing the etude and dial it back until you comfortably can and stay in that zone and keep working on it. Give it some time and try again at the faster pace. This should work. If you start growing frustrated set the guitar down for a bit and come back later on and try again.
If you've been practicing that way I'd say just to keep practicing at your max comfort zone until you practically are yawning at how easy it is. At least until you're having as little issue with playing it as possible then try again. Also how are you holding the guitar? Do you play classical position or modern? With sweeps I think it may be easier to play in the classical position since your wrist and hand will be more comfortable that way. My fingers can stretch a full fret and a tad bit more further classical compared to modern (guitar sitting on the right leg). That’s exactly what I’ve been doing and it’s good to know I was practicing right! Ok cool thanks! and I just found out I was holding the guitar weirdIf you've been practicing that way I'd say just to keep practicing at your max comfort zone until you practically are yawning at how easy it is. I just tried positioning my hand that way on my guitar and I'm not sure how the hell you could stand that for 3 days let alone 3 years! That felt really uncomfortable! That felt like the equivalent of Willie Adler's right hand picking technique! I hope the switch from that fretting technique to the standard two ways is quick and easy for you.Ok cool thanks! and I just found out I was holding the guitar weirdI had my thumb bent over the neck, my fingers leaning to the left and Didn’t curl up my fretting fingers enough so I basically was hitting the strings with the middle of my finger not the tips. That’s what I get for playing really slappy nu metal for 3 years plus I’ve never played a solo before so I didn’t know the proper techniques and there’s so much more I still need to learn
If you are rolling your fingers you wont need to mute ala e and a shape arpeggios. I find it's easier to move descending. Ascending is harder but your fret hand should follow your pick so you should be able to mute that way. If you arent rolling your fingers and doing more c g and d shapes.. you'll probably find it easier to mute hype slightly lifting the fingers up as you go.. meaning muting with your fret hand isnt as important. But I'd think youd want to practice it anyways to get I to the habit.
