Bass player trying guitar

Hey guys!! I just recently joined this site and I am super excited to improve on the guitar! I’ve been playing for about 4 years, but I just haven’t been able to make progress with my skills. However, I would consider myself to be skilled on the bass. I can play very fast and complicated basslines, but for some reason, I can’t play anything fast or complicated on the guitar. Does anyone have any suggestions to how I can improve my skills on the guitar, having experience playing bass? Thanks!!

1st of all welcome to the community my friend!
What exactly are you having issues with with guitar? When you say that it’s hard to progress your skills it can mean many many different things. Is there a way that you can narrow it down a little bit more? Is it hand coordination, chord changing, speed playing?

Thanks for responding! I would say that hand coordination and speed playing are definitely the biggest challenges I have. I’m fine with learning songs, but I can never get them up to speed. I am also having a hard time with how close the strings and frets are to each other, compared to the bass.

    Okay, Bailey. First, WELCOME.
Second, I have been a guitar player for many years, but I do also play bass (more of necessity than anything else, when I record). I find that on bass, my movements need to be MUCH more exaggerated. Finger presses harder, spacing farther, just everything BIGGER.
You didn’t say if you play bass with a pick. I’d be curious to know.
But on guitar, to get fast and clean, there’s a focus on accurate and minimal movement. When learning things on guitar, and trying to build speed, focus on keeping your movements, on picking and fretting hands, as small and efficient as possible. Slow down – a LOT if you have to – to get to that efficiency, before you start building up the speed.
Hope this helps you find the right direction to break down the wall. Good luck!
