I mean it's a legit way of learning stuff. When I started playing the piano at 4 years old, I had a brief introduction to the notes, then started playing some songs and learning more stuff along the way.
What really got me into playing guitar was playing Rocksmith honestly. The original one had 3 Avenged songs (I think) and that was perfect for me. Able to slow it down as much as I wanted to practice. Mind you, they were wayyy above my skill level, but that didn't stop me.
Now in saying that, I did develop some bad habits and lacked a lot of direction with technique. I learned most of that through here and then was able to really fix some things
Think of playing guitar as being a baby. First, you have to learn the basics and understand what you're doing before anything else. Then, just like a small child, you need to learn from the example of other musicians and artists around you in order to learn what is "right and wrong". When you become familiarized with their techniques, their thinking, and their processes you can then begin doing the same things but with your own personal touch. Remember, it will take a long time before you become completely familiar with guitar, so definitely begin learning songs since this will allow you to remain interested in the instrument, which is EVERYTHING if you want to eventually become a shredder like Syn!
