I'm using that exercise to practice my G chord specifically. I can play it but I'm having a really hard time changing into it (in a clean way)!!! thanks!
Thanks @Ed Seith for the video and advice! I have noticed that's a thing I could do to maximize efficiency, but for some reason, my fingers all want to move away from the fretboard for each chord change lol. I'll have to force myself to practice these pivots/changes specifically to help ingrain it, I think! (A to C to E/Em?)

Something that helped me when first getting started was using a capo. I put it at the fifth fret and practiced my shapes higher so that the stretches weren't as bad, and then I would work around chord shapes individually like Ailee said.. As I got comfortable I would move it back a fret so that I would stretch my fingers gradually until I was without a capo and just playing it open.
