I don't really have an answer to the question, because probably most of the "best guitar players" are people I either don't like to listen to or have never heard of. I also don't think there's really a way to measure all the different kinds of greatness- technical proficiency is imo less impressive than historical importance and influence.
Blind Lemon Jefferson vs Jason Richardson, who ranks higher?
How can I compare modern studio musicians vs Joe Messina, Robert White, and Eddie Willis?
I dunno. So, here's five guitarists I like and respect. Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, more Yngwie, and Gary Moore. Sorry Syn, you're too young to make the list. I bet there are several country guitarists in Nashville who can blow half those guys out of the water, but I don't know them. There are probably numerous technical death metal guitarists who can play even faster, but I don't know them.
Honorable mention goes to to BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen. I almost never listen to any of their music, but their historical importance and influence is immeasurable.
