That happens with a lot of bands. I skip them due to singles.i didnt listen to many bands. Some I've gone back. Others I'm afraid to take the chance on lol

I made a playlist of Def Leppard when I want to listen to them. It's most of On Through the Night, High n Dry and Pyromania, and then a handful of non-singles from most of the other albums. It's satisfying. I saw them many times in the late 80s - always a great show back then. Lots of good memories.

Am I the only one around here who doesn't care for the 80's hair bands? Lol.

All those bands have a couple good songs, but for me most of it is corny and cliche. When it comes to the 80's, thrash is where it's at for me.
Funny how Dokken outsold every thrash band bar Metallica isn't it? And let's face it, Metallica ain't thrash. Thrash is marginally heavier than glam, but still not that heavy, despite what they think. Here is a photo of Slayer, notice anything? The make-up maybe? Dokken, as an example, destroys every thrash band when compared to riffs, solos, vocals, drums, everything. Oh, and 'hair metal', what does that even mean? Bands with hair? Bit of a joke.

Dokken destroys every thrash band? Okay okay, I'll take that as if you've never heard Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Testament, Exodus and Dark Angel.

Also, Slayer wearing make-up is actually derived from the first wave black metal. Slayer, along with Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate and Bathory were wearing make-up to look evil, not really to look like girls or whatever.

You're talking about the era that I grew up in, but also the era when guitar ruled the world, if you will. There's no shortage of cheese in that mine, but there's a lot of gold to be found, as well. I tend to prefer more deep album cuts than radio singles, especially from bands like Dokken, who really did have a bunch of good stuff, even if their arrangements were overly formulaic.

It's the era that gave us Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, George Lynch, Nuno Bettencourt, Randy Rhoads, Vito Bratta and a gargantuan pile of other extremely talented guitarists. The 80s were a golden age of metal in so many ways - the effects are still clearly being felt.

I get why you don't like a lot of it, but it would be unwise to dismiss it all outright. There's a lot of damn good music from that era.

Ooh extreme is absolutely amazing! Also unchain the night by dokken has an incredible riff!

I'm not dismissing it, it's just that it doesn't speak to me as much as thrash from that era, and later on black and death genres do. I agree for those guitar players you named, but I don't really connect Joe Satriani and Randy Rhoads to the LA glam thing, you know?

I guess for me the problem with these other bands is that they kinda commercialized the NWOBHM sound and were all about tabloids and stuff. That's why it's interesting to me that Pantera completely ditched that style once Phil joined and became what they've became. Like Vinnie Paul once said, fancy clothes don't play music, the guys themselves do.

Put on Beast from the East by Dokken and you will understand. Have not heard of any of those bands, neither has the mainstream either. George Lynch can destroy any thrash shredder with a few notes. Interesting points though. Never would have thought about that.

The media talked about their antics, that shouldn't be the basis for how good the music is. You only probably think they commercialized NWOBHM because you have only ever heard those singles, if you put on a Dokken album then you will find that they have all types of songs, not just commercial metal. It's also funny how thrash is supposed to have destroyed Glam in the nineties, yet, Dokken sold remarkably well and still played arenas throughout the majority of grunge.

Although I cut my teeth on many of these 'hair metal' bands back in the day, I don't go out of my way to listen to it these days. Still some great tracks to be found if you sift through the cheese though.

I mean, you just admitted to not hearing any of those bands yet you still claim that glam bands are better without ever listening to the bands I mentioned... Like, what else is there to discuss?

And does mainstream success signify the quality of an artist? By that logic, Migos would be one of the best artists of all time.

I'm talking about the rock world, and success, something the majority of thrash bands had little of, bar the big four. Of course popularity is not a constant with quality, if that was the case then Dokken would have been more successful than Bon Jovi. Plus, thrash is pretty generic, chromatics and pentatonic, and solos with no melody are boring after a while. Some thrash rules, don't get me wrong, the greatest thrash song of all time is Painkiller by Judas Priest. And yes, Painkiller is a thrash song. I just find it funny that the supposed dinosaurs of NWOBHM came out with a thrash song that destroyed anything any of the big four has done. How about I check out those thrash bands you mentioned and you check out Dokken?

Sure, I'll check out Dokken. Only know their most popular songs anyway. You tell me where to start and I'll tell you where to start with Kreator, Sodom and Exodus.

I do think the first Lynch Mob album is better than Dokken. Wicked Sensation, with Oni Logan singing.

But I also don't think this is something worth arguing about - the great joy of music is that everyone's opinion is both right and wrong. Unless you love Post Malone. Fuck that shit.

Really anything with George Lynch on guitar. The first five or so albums should be good.
Alright. I'll listen to some stuff now.

    As for you:

Kreator - start with Gods of Violence, their latest album from 2017, because it's thrash with big NWOBHM influences and modern production. Chances are you'll dig that one the best. After that, Extreme Aggression and Coma of Souls.

Sodom - Agent Orange, Persecution Mania and In the Sign of Evil.

Exodus - Bonded by Blood, Fabulous Disaster.

Testament - The Legacy, The New Order, Practice What You Preach.

These albums are good for start, because you'll get the idea what is it that they do (and do so well, that is).
