Hey everyone! I am having a bit of trouble writing catchy rhythm tracks for my band. Any tips for creating better tracks? More towards the down, dirty, and heavy side. And also I need tips on writing lyrics. I can’t do that for shit.
As far as writing lyrics I suck at that but when I want to come up with a riff I kind of hum or think of a melody in my head and then try to transpose that and play it on guitar. If that makes any sense. Sometimes I just combine famous riffs and twist them a bit and stuff happens
Have the drummer (or a drum machine) doing a beat. Could be simple, could be “different.” Could be fast, could be slow. Decide and commit. And then just start jamming different things over it until something clicks and you find yourself coming back to it.
Yeah.. just jam. Most of my riffs are from just jamming. The best ones are the simplist ones. Catchy simple riffs. One riff or melody could write the entire song. Enter roman sky.
Yes, like what Ed said, let the drummer be your guide! Also, listen to different rhythmic counts for inspiration. I really drive a lot of my rhythmic influences from Judas Priest, Testament and Pantera.
I agree with all of the above for riff writing.
As for lyrics, start with an idea. Then put together phrases/thoughts for that idea. Trying to make it rhyme is sometimes the tricky part. It’s usually easier to start with the chorus.
