Okay so I’m done with lost, and I’m working on new material. (The performance didn’t go well but people didn’t notice some mistakes and thought we were amazing at guitar and we got 2nd place? So I guess thats good) Anyway, now I have to learn Afterlife, almost easy, and beast and the harlot by July 6th. That’s when we are doing a festival gig so I need to have those down by then. Afterlife is obviously my biggest concern and I just started actually slowing it down and starting from the beginning of the solo less than a week ago. I’m currently on the legato part before the shreddy sweep stuff and I have it at about 120 BPMS.i just need tips on how to learn this solo by July and how to learn it as quickly as possible without rushing through it. I know it’s a silly question but time is everything. I’m not as worried about almost easy cause it’s mainly just the sweeps and the very end of the solo that I need to work on. And idk if we are doing beast and the harlot or not. Oh and speaking of sweeping can someone give me tips on how to do them right? I can do it slow but I struggle gaining speed so any tips would be great from someone who is good at sweeping. Sorry this post is so long

Practice and time……and practice. There is no quick solution.
Any particular reason why those 3 songs were chosen if the technical aspects are still a bit of a struggle? A7X have a pretty large collection of material to choose from, why not pick songs that you know you can nail now?

If you think you won’t have enough time to properly learn it, maybe you could consider “dumbing down” the solo a bit to make it easier to play. I suppose most people in the audience won’t be that familiar with a7x and won’t notice it?

I would like to know why you’re choosing some of the hardest songs to play for the solos. There are tons of A7X songs that are incredible and the solos are a bit more obtainable. First of all, I should REALLY say congratulations on placing second!
I agree with everyone here: There is no quick solution, and ‘dumbing down’ a solo may be in order. I ALWAYS like to tell people to push their boundaries and to go for the big goal and don’t settle for anything less than what you want. But with HTTK, I knew the solo was for the most part obtainable with just some spots that would need work. It was a big goal, but a practical one that would still take hard work. I’m not trying to undermine your abilities, but July is 3 months away. It took me 2.5 months of HOURS a day practicing the HTTK solo to get it up to speed, standing up, and ready for a show. And even then, it wasn’t entirely acceptable technique. I literally spent almost 4 hours a day on that solo. And that’s like a super beginner’s solo if you compare it to the likes of Afterlife. I would hate for you to stress yourself out. But hell, the coolest thing is getting up their with a big dream, and doing your absolute best! Because whether or not you bomb the whole solo, you made a goal and you went for it! And THAT is a BIG payoff. You definitely don’t want to go up there wishing you would have done something different. So right here is where you should probably choose your route:
Do you want to play it safe or do you want to dream big? There’s pros and cons for each.
But you do you, my man. If this is something you REALLY want to do, I’ll tell you a practice secret that helped me for my HTTK sweeps: It’s to practice the arpeggio positions in the CAGED lessons by using sweep picking. It’s fucking HARD. And you get 6-string sweeps and you have slides that are randomly thrown in there. By the time I got those up to speed with 16th notes on the backing track, the HTTK sweeps were like nothing. I OVER-challenged myself by playing something harder, and the ‘hard stuff’ became easier.
******PLEASE NOTE!!!!******
Afterlife’s tempo is 110BPM, not 120. So you’re already an over-achiever, haha! It goes in and out of a double-time feel. But don’t set your metronome any higher than 110. You have to practice going in and out of each feel and being able to get that feeling right.
Practice your 32nd notes, triplets and sixlets!!! This is the ‘shreddy’ part. A sixlet and a triplet are almost the same thing except for where the accents are. So when you’re practicing with a metronome, make sure you know where the accent count is so you can get the timing right of the ‘shreddy’ measure section.
My practice technique for the HTTK sweeps was to play them boringly slow. I would practice at a certain BPM for ten minutes and then increase the BPM by only ONE. But in less than an hour, it was so easy I improved by 30 BPMs instead of 3. For sweeping, watch how you angle your pick and how you move your pick-gripping fingers. It plays a huge part in the smoothness of how you ‘rake’ across the strings. Dig into the strings a little bit so that it’s clear. Keep us up to date on your progress and good luck! I hope this helped a little.

Afterlife is kinda a tricky one to do right. I would advice to get used to winging the legato run because that’s probably the hardest one besides get used to mixing alternate picking and sweeping for all the fast part in the second halve(no I don’t mean economy picking here).
And yeah sweeps are kind of important here. From the top of my head try to focus on being able sweep C shape and E shape and be able to do it fast. For the E shape it is especially important to be able to roll with your index finger.
I hope this helps a little bit!

I don’t know how to play the Afterlife solo or anything man but I do have a method of practicing that may help you. Instead of using a metronome you could use this app I’m currently using for HTTK called “Amazing Slow Downer” you can loop certain parts of the song as you wish and slow it down without it being all distorted. Also try upping the speed every few minutes with like the speed bursting technique Papa Gates mentioned in the Crossover picking lesson. Good luck man.

That helps a lot @jak thanks! Yeah I guess we went for the “harder songs” cause I mean they are definately A7Xs more popular songs. We will also be playing so far away, gunslinger, and dear God. So we aren’t doing only “crazy hard songs with stupid solos” but I’ll practice the arpegios in the CAGED position like jam was talking about. I knew going into this that 3 months is not very long to learn and perfect a solo like afterlife but I think I’m just going to try it and go for it. If it’s not done by July then we will just do almost easy and beast and the harlot. I say those because I already know a good chunk of both those solos so I don’t think they will be too terrible
