Yngwie doesn’t over-use shredding. He’s awesome at everything, and shredding just happens to be a small part of everything. His use of vibrato and other expressive elements along with his ear for melody and harmony is the best there is, and I can’t name one guitarist living or dead whose tone I prefer vs Yngwie.
Rather than just disagree with everyone I’ll try to shed some light on how to listen to Yngwie. Think of most of the first couple of minutes as foreshadowing, just like an author might use. If you listen to the song twice in a row, which of course I recommend, you might find that everything makes so much sense from that perspective. Instead of hearing puzzle pieces that don’t fit, you should start to hear a complete picture. I would also bet that most or all of the lead guitar in this song was improvised, although of course I can’t prove that.

Sorry, but Do you even know the original song?
He barely changed anything besides Eric Clapton’s part and using the same drumbeat as in black Star and he made it a lot worse by doing so. The song is called while my guitar gently weeps not while my guitar gently sweeps for a reason.
It has very little to do with able to listen to Yngwie. I actually like Black Star, Far Beyond the Sun and arpeggios from hell he just completely missed the point of that song here and therefore ruins it and it’s not very good.

There’s no reason for Yngwie to try to sound like the Beatles. I would never click play on a Yngwie track expecting or wanting him to sound like George Harrison. Going his own direction with the song was the right thing to do. That being said, I’ll admit that the first time I ever heard the song it was that time with Prince, so that baked the idea into my head that it’s a song meant to have an awesome guitar solo.
Regarding the drum beat, the “ba ba pa” makes sense because this version of the song would be too busy with a strong bass performance like the original song has, so replacing that bass rhythm with the kick drum is appropriate.

He doesn’t have to sound like George Harrison, Clapton did the solos on it anyway, but he at least has to do it justice. There is a really big difference between yngwie’s solo and Prince’s solo. Prince’s solo is tasty while Yngwie just kinda sounds like an insecure 16 year old who only wants to shred and us afraid to just go slow(or guitar wankery if you will)
The best way to describe it(and many many people in ultimate guitar agree with me) is that George Harrison just died a second time that’s how bad it is. I also give it like 10 tries and couldn’t get past the first 10 seconds of it in any of them.
May I ask why you like this cover? Because in my opinion he took everything great about the original version and. Add it like really bad instead. Remember because it’s Yngwie is not a reason to like it.

You know what, we might as well take a minute to have some common ground. My favorite George Harrison solo is in Alvin Lee’s “The Bluest Blues”. If you’re in the mood to listen to some 10/10 tasteful guitar melody that’s where it’s at.

I remember seeing people basically say that Prince’s solo was just wankery, so bad and distasteful that it was like George Harrison dying a second time. Looking back, it wasn’t. I think that in the future people will be more accepting of Yngwie’s version as well.
quick edit: the reason I like this cover is because it gives me “that feeling”. It emotionally connects with me more strongly than the original does. It helps that I like Yngwie’s singing performance.
