At this point I would concentrate on playing ONLY things that make you happy. Just find the joy again. Don’t think of it as practice. You can always dig deeper if you want to. But for now – what makes you happy? Shredding jazz licks over country songs? 3 finger tapping over polkas? Playing power chords over Bieber songs? It doesn’t matter. Just find a way to play what makes you smile. If you can do this, you will understand more about music and life than 90% of the guitar players in the world.

PG just nailed this. If you say you feel like parcticig is a chore, really only play stuff that makes you happy. I honestly recently quit my band for the same reason. There was to much stuff I didn’t enjoy about it and felt like rehearsals where like a chore and never actually wanted to go and I didn’t really like most of the songs we played and I had this for a while and at some point I just decided to quit(just the band I still play guitar). You have been playing guitar before so there is something you like about. Maybe you like playing gypsy jazz or flamenco I don’t that’s something you have to decide for yourself just don’t think about practicing so much for now. I do it to sometimes when I have little time but want to play guitar. I just play the stuff I really love to play and barely practice!

‘I’m having problems because I kept playing the same thing like basic things and things that are to hard’
(I posted this a few days ago but it disappeared, odd.)
Well that could be a big part of the problem, trying to do something that is currently to hard for you is going to kill your motivation. Baby steps, if Smoke on the Water is way to easy, pick something a LITTLE more difficult, something that will have a new challenge that you can comfortably meet with your limited practice time. It could be as simple as a faster BPM, more frequent chord changes or new chords you haven’t learned yet.
Forget trying to learn all the theory and scale stuff right now and get back to the songs. I hate music theory, I have been playing for over 25 years and have never learned much of it, it bores me terribly. I know 1 pentatonic scale box well and that’s it, but it doesn’t stop me learning and playing the songs I enjoy.
Take a break if you need to, come back and try again later. Maybe even rethink what it us you want to get out of the instrument and set yourself small, acheivable goals to make it happen. Also, there is always going to be someone better than you, you can let it drive you or you can let it destroy you, that choice is yours.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do next.

Yeah I saw that you posted something and I couldn’t see it anyways on to the more important thing first thank you and it’s I don’t know what I want to achieve with the guitar I feel like I’m not good enough anytime I try taking baby steps it fails it’s like I can’t do it like I tried learning some legato from the song pull me der just doing it very slow I couldn’t even do that the fast run he does at the end I tried slowing it down, I’m stuck and all of the people have suggested great things but anytime I try doing those things I can’t like I said all I can do is play a bunch of Metallica songs down pick fast play pentatonic and play power chords and a few other kind of chords and sweep pick I’m sure I can do a little more then that but that’s what I do the most, I know what you are going to say don’t do those things any more but I can’t because I can’t learn anything. I don’t know that’s why I am thinking about giving it up it doesn’t bring me joy any more it makes me mad I feel like I’m letting someone down I have no self esteem for the guitar or even most things it’s eating me away it seems, I don’t think the guitar was cut out for me in the first place to be honest I thought it would be a cool hobby but I was wrong if I take a break and come back to it I’m going to feel the same way because I’ve tried it. Thanks for the help I appreciate it good luck. I don’t know what I’m doing with guitar anymore

Lachlan, the thing with music is that we are all at different parts in a musical journey and because of that i wouldnt necessarily advise to compare your playing to someone elses. We all have our moment where we feel shit, and in all honesty, I’m experiencing other things outside of music to see what I truly want to do. Im 26, Ive played for 13 years and I still feel I dont know what Im doing with life. There are people on this community who have been playing longer. You could be playing guitar from as little as a few days right up to literally decades, however despite these differences in practice, do you know what we all have in common? Is that we are always learning, and we are always developing our skills, not just in music but in everything else also! We always subconsciously raise the inner bar in our mind, and our own definition of what makes a guitar player great, will change and get very detailed due to the way we learn and grow. This is not failure, Lachlan. This is you wanting to grow. However this means, you gotta work it out. Definitely learn what makes you happy. Theres nothing wrong with down picking metallica riffs. Hetfield is a f***ing monster and a rhythmic machine. Power chords are cool. Most chords have a form of a power chord in one shape or another. The pentatonics are wicked aswell! Take a look at Zakk Wylde if you get the chance. This guy is pure fire on the guitar. You can get so much fuel out of these 3 techniques.
Definitely stick to learning things that make you happy. Maybe look into flamenco as you so mentioned. Ive tried it, its wicked fun! Even though Im crap at it! And absolutely take a break from things, take a pause, breath in, breath out, and try again.

Im not an expert in flamenco by any stretch of the imagination (never attempted it) but I believe the harmonic minor scale and phrygian mode are used quite a lot. At this stage, if you don’t know those, don’t worry about the theory behind them but learn the scale shapes and you should have a good start point!
Hope this helps but as I said I am not too familiar with flamenco.

I wouldn’t close the door on it just yet. When I was 16 I desperately wanted to play. My parents bought me a guitar and even got me lessons but I quickly got irritated because I couldn’t play what I wanted. Fast forward a over 10 years and here I am. I’m not great. I post my videos that are no where near the level of the other people on this sight but I enjoy playing. I don’t practice like I should because responsibilities take priority. What I’ve found works for me is I do the lessons on here but I always try and find simple fun things to learn. There are a slew of simple riffs and songs that you can learn via tabs that make it fun ! You don’t have to be perfect. If it’s to the point you’re hating it, take a break for awhile. But don’t give up entirely.

The thing with Flamenco is, there are techniques in there that will help you learn a new approach to what you may already know. Hell, if you dont know, then you’ve learnt something new! Its kinda why learning new genres helps develop your skills, it gives you a fresh idea on how to play something which you have already learnt. Ideas you might already come across is the chords they use. Lots of minors and dominants and majors and so on. What makes these chords a little different is the movement between the chords. Lots of spanish cadences and chord movements you have never heard before, but still using the chords you already know. Flamenco players use ALOT of arpeggios, but not in the same way rock and metal guitar players approach them. They use finger picking to play them. You would probably have noticed as well that they dont use picks. They play their music by finger picking and play rhythmically interesting strumming patterns.
The book I have is ‘The Art of Tremolo’ by Ioannis Anastassakis. This is a really useful book. Unfortunately for strumming, I watched alot of youtube videos and read pages from the internet.
I hope this helps mate, and remember, when things get tough, it means you are doing something right. It means you are challenging yourself to be better.

You should start with the rhythms, the Flamenco has "Palos" (like subgenres) Bulerias, Soleas, Alegrias. Etc. Some Palos Doesn't has a Rhythm like Tarantas, Mineras, Rondeñas. Start with some techniques very slow, Rasgueados, Picados, Golpes. But the most important thing in Flamenco are the Rhythms and their accents. I don't speak English sorry if you don't understand some things.

All I can say in this topic is....listen to new music. Music is the reason we pick up the guitar in the first place, therefore if you listen to something that makes you fall in love with music again...you will want to pick the guitar up.

I know that sometimes it feels like a chore, but then you need to take a break. Change the practice schedule, learn something new. Play for fun and just enjoy it.

This hobby is hard...like really hard...but I think we all here can agree that it is very rewarding as well.

Again, if you need a break, take it. But listen to music!

    Hope this helped.
