i want to create this post to help beginner players, cause i’ve saw that many people that are starting guitar doesn’t know or care about theory, i commited that mistake myself, but theory its super important if you want to create your own songs and solos that’s really important to improve as a musician, unfortunately its something that you can learn in 1 hour it takes much time to learn and understand and there’s no shortcuts but its really crucial if you want to be really a great guitar player cause if not you’ll only be able of play what people plays and not create what other will want to play, know what i mean? dive in on theory it will help you

I agree 100%. The biggest thing though that beginners need to realize is that learning theory is something that needs to be built on. A lot of beginners tried to learn the most complex Theory as soon as they get into it and next thing they know there are lost and confused. Just like learning guitar or doing anything, there are simple steps that they need to build on and add more knowledge as they carry on. But yes I agree. If you want to be a well-established musician I think knowing your theory is a big aspect of it. Like Rick beato says it’s a language it’s how musicians helped themselves to communicate with one another.

I really start to realize this! I am playing for quite some years and started for fun when my brother got an acoustic guitar. I hated school music and had no rhythmic feeling whatsoever (I dont think I’m doing much better now about the rhythm thing hah) but really got into heavier music around that day. So I started working with it and playing covers and solo of my favorite songs. But that gets me nowhere on long terms. I just start out and hang on lesson 7 at the moment, but today I played something I “wrote” myself the first time ever. And I know what scale it is in and what notes I am playing. A big thanks to the Gates here again making me start learning theory!

totally agree with jak, i’ve seen so many people stucked trying to learn how the modes work or the different aplications of melodic armonic and eolian minor scales without understanding how they’re built and the basics of scales and patterns.so starting from the most basics things and slowly progressing in most advanced things and don’t do move to another thing until it’s totally understanded it’s important to not get stucked

I also did the same Calvin. All these years I was just blindly playing according to my intuitions. No theory to back up. I ignored theory so much that even a simple thing like building chords was unknown to me until recently. I regret it now. It is best if you learn the theory alongside when you are practising. Now I am glad that I have started with the theory, of course thanks to this site.

I mean, I think I learned scales.. I just didn’t know what the notes were or anything. And it probably didn’t match at all. every solo was the same scale.. now, every solo matches the scales to the songs played. And I learned every song was a different scale.. so when you play the same lead scale over top of it.. yeah lol. I mean, it sounded good before no doubt.. but it sounds SO MUCH BETTER now.
