So is economy picking basically alternate picking but your not changing the direction of your picking when you descend the strings. For example, if you're playing down up down on the low E string, you do the same for the rest of the strings, right? If so, then I've been doing alternate picking completely wrong.

Yeah, pretty much, normal alternate picking on a single string then following through with a single motion when changing to new strings. So in your example of down, up, down on the E string the last down would continue in one motion through the first down on the A string. Same idea but starting with an upstroke when working in the opposite direction.

So easy to do slow. So hard for muscle memory not to just start alternate picking.

It is because economy picking can only be done 3 notes per string which alternate picking doesn’t require.
