So is economy picking basically alternate picking but your not changing the direction of your picking when you descend the strings. For example, if you're playing down up down on the low E string, you do the same for the rest of the strings, right? If so, then I've been doing alternate picking completely wrong.

Yeah, pretty much, normal alternate picking on a single string then following through with a single motion when changing to new strings. So in your example of down, up, down on the E string the last down would continue in one motion through the first down on the A string. Same idea but starting with an upstroke when working in the opposite direction.
