In this lesson we show some simple Pentatonic picking exercises.

If anyone gets confused on the up and down run with hammer ons and pull offs, just don repeat the 8th fret on the 1st string. He does a pull off directly after hammering on and gets ahead of the tab. Just watch what he does and ignore the tab :>

Are you still supposed to hear the hammer on's clearly with clean settings bc I have to turn on some distortion and gain in order for it to sound loud enough.

Yes you should! You should also be able to hear them on acoustic

Yeah there are plenty of professional players who will sometimes go so fast on acoustic that it might not ring out, but generally when practicing everything should ring out good.

The upstroke on the pull offs is killing me lol. I keep doing downstrokes even when im consciously thinking it needs to be up. Gotta break my habit of always using down strokes I guess lol.

Really ?! Awesome sauce ? So....should I stick with the downstrokes since I can do them better or try and get my hand to do upstrokes? Lol. It doesn’t want to co-operate.
It’s so weird.
I can alternate pick fine (not fast but accurately)
But for whatever reason doing an upstroke for a pull off seems really weird and I have to put ALOT of effort into it.

I'm the same way. If it isn't anything that will be detrimental to my playing later on down the road when then I don't think ill worry about it too much. However, if I am ever doing something that will cause me issues later on, I would rather correct them early.

like for instance, I never had a second thought about the fact that I anchor my pinky a lot when I play, but it was pointed out that this might hurt me later on, so I have tried to stop doing that.

so if this doesn't hurt, im definitely going to use downstrokes lol.

Frank Gambale has a great DVD called Chop Builder that goes over alot of these types of picking exercises. Its a pretty advanced BUT, there is a slowed down version on Youtube. Hes got some killer 2 note per string exercises on there that really help. Like teacher said, use that Metronome!

well, well, well, here I am again . hahah. im trying to really get back into the habit of doing at least one lesson per day.
still struggling with pull offs. but I know its a basic technique I really need to learn so im kicking myself in the ass and making it a priority lol

Hey, I'm having some trouble doing pulloffs. I can get them to sound right, but I sometimes hit the lower string when pulling down. Does anyone have some advice how to avoid that?

Try to make sure you got the string straight and not at an angle.

Another thing is try to slightly hover the fleshy bit of your lower fretting finger over the string below.

@gissoe pull down and out a little and add some fret hand muting if needed after awhile it shouldn't feel like you need to pull down and out and you can do them several times in succession
