This may be a little before a lot of you guys’ time, but a LONG time ago there was a video floating around of this 9 year old kid that was half the size of his own guitar straight up SHREDDING some Yngwie licks among other things. It was nothing short of impressive and it put all of us shredders to shame, especially because his look was so unassuming.
Digressing to a quick anecdote and fast forwarding to about 4 or 5 years later, I was attending Musicians Institute and hanging out with my Russian friend Alex Oparin for his birthday. Alex was attending the bass program, but we were hanging out, drinking, and smoking cigars on the rooftop of his apartment in Hollywood. We were talking about all kinds of things, but the we started talking about different shredders and stuff and I brought up this crazy little kid that had SUPER clean technique, especially given his age. I went into describing the kid in detail and he was like “Yeah, I’ve seen that. That’s my little brother Anton.” I just kinda laughed and he’s like “No, seriously that’s my brother. I’m playing bass in that video.” I’m just like “Stfu, quit playing around” So we pulled the video up and, sure enough, there was Alex playing bass right next to Anton. And then my mind exploded. It was pretty bananas.
Fast forward again to this post. That was 14 years ago, and Anton is now 23 years old and an absolutely KILLER guitarist and musician. This kid has the cleanest technique and an INCREDIBLE musical vocabulary, and the awesome thing is that he has great taste in his music and enjoys many styles. He can play Paul Gilbert lick better than Paul himself, but his favorite band of all time is AC/DC. He’s great at blues, jazz, classical, shred. He loves it all. The reason I’m bringing this all up is because Anton has recently started 2 new Youtube channels on top of his original channel in Russian, one in English and the other in Spanish, where he has been giving and will continue to give lessons. I believe he is also starting his own online guitar academy as well. His attention to detail and the way he explains things is, in my eyes, pretty perfect. Everyone here can definitely benefit from the things Alex has to say, so please, head over to his channel and show him some love.
Original video of Anton- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cr3fzuwF_g
Him teaching the solo to “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Even if you know this solo already, WATCH IT. He will probably show you stuff that you didn’t realize.- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RjcJaAgfic
His explanation of alternate picking- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RjcJaAgfic
Enjoy!
