Question About "Slide-ups" in Lesson 24

Hello everyone! I decided to learn the cool little mini-solo Papa does in lesson 24 in the beginning, and I notice he adds some little nuances of slide-ups in there. The note he slides FROM isn’t always necessarily in the D scale, but it still sounds good. It always is a 1 fret (half-step) slide. I thought it was really cool and so I’m trying to incorporate that into my playing but sometimes it just sounds um, not as good as his does. Sometimes it sounds like I start on a sour note and land on a sour note. Are there any little tricks or things to keep in mind when placing those little slide-ups? I love them a lot!

I watched the part you’re talking about, even though I had a pretty good idea what you meant – you described it well. The hint is not in the notation – his embellishment is not notated. The key is to think of it more like a ghost note- it happens slightly before the beat and is not held for ANY period of time. The minute you strike the note, you’re already sliding, and you’re on the written note AT the beat of the measure.
It’s a feel thing which makes it harder to describe. You could almost write it like:
    ——(6)/7——
with the 6th fret note not being struck definitively. If you’re still not getting it, we can do a Skype in the next few days maybe.
