Remembering The Rev

What a badass motherfucker he was. I wish I could have got to see him live, i’m sure it would have been amazing! My singer feels attached to his musical genius because the lyrics he wrote are things she relates to on a personal level. She always says “every time I see him, he reminds me of everything I wish I could be but am too afraid to be.”
Anyone have any special memories, moments or thoughts they’d like to share?
I hope nothing but love to those missing him today.

I will always regret blowing my chance to see Jimmy live! It was 2008 and my show got rescheduled (three years later) but I couldn’t trade things around a third time at work. Kicking myself still for missing that.
But I really loved his voice, how he was so comfortable with himself. He inspired me to restart my writing career and I dedicated my first published short story to him as a thank you. His talent was beyond this world and he is missed every sing day!

Jimmy was an absolute geniuse and he was also an amazing person, Calvin I would have to agree with you haha, both Matt’s voice and Jimmy’s are sooo unqiue but I think i prefer Jimmy’s, I remember when i first got into A7X i would listen to afterlife over and over my favourite part being the bridge when Jimmy’s vocals come in, one of my absolute favourite parts of an Avenged song

For me, The Rev was my first ever drum influence. I heard Bat Country for the first time on a video game and could not believe what I was hearing. I was very young, 8 years old, but I just couldn’t believe the insane snare rolls and speed but also the diversity of the tasty grooves paired with this punk like style. This made me interested in the drums, and led to having my first kit at age 8.
I played songs by A7X for hours and mimicked the drum beats very poorly.
I have studied his playing and songwriting for years, I’ve learnt songs upon songs of his in the efforts to see how such an amazing drummer can be as such.
Cut to 10 years later, being a drummer and musician is now my lifes goal. Without Bat Country or years of studying Jimmy and reading his philosophies, I wouldn’t be where I am today as a drummer, a musician, or even a person.
I wish I could have met him to tell him thank you. Words genuinely can’t describe it.

I’ve only been listening to A7X since 2014 and I still miss Jimmy. I feel so sorry for the boys and the rest of the A7X family at this time of the year. It just really is great they have so many positive memories of him. I’m sure all the boys are together today celebrating his life in some crazy way.
He’s probably upstairs smiling down and glad the boys continued on. They are so strong.
    We’re missing you. RIP foREVer.

He was a big influence to me. Vocally, his voice hits me on a deep level, his songwriting was just unique and ive never heard anything like it but just his personality is what made me really appreciate him. You can see how great he was just by the way Avenged talks about him and how they honor him at every show.
he is immortalized foREVer as I have the rev deathbat tattoo on my arm.
    I miss him.

I love all these comments! So touching.
My only disagreement is about comparing Matt’s voice to Jimmy’s. Although Jimmy had a psychotic scream, Matt will always be my favorite singer. His robust vibrato is still unparalleled. 😎

I remember reading about his death on the newspaper the day after it happened.
I only knew a little about Avenged back then, but hearing the news was definitely impactful and it echoed in my head for the next few days.
Many years later I found out he wrote many of my favourite A7X songs.
