Rocksmith?

I have been an avid user of the software for probably the last year. Before that it’s been an on and off thing. I can now play through a lot of the songs I like but i really want to learn fundamentals that rocksmith is lacking in. I generally practice for 2+ hours a day religiously. I just worry that Rocksmiths method of breaking down chords actually slows my learning down. (I’d that makes sense)

I’ve been playing Rocksmith 2014 for 4 years now and it’s amazing. It’s the easiest way to keep a beginner away from quitting because the game adjusts to your playing skill. If you are just starting out and decide to play a song, rocksmith will show you only 1 note at a time and the more and more you start hitting the right notes, rocksmith will add more notes and it will keep doing that until you perfect the song and after you perfect it you get the master mode where everything is invisible and you have to play it straight from your head. Rocksmith 2014 has everything, from countless number of songs to choose from, to game excercises for tremolo picking, hitting the right strings, chord learning, scales….
It also has a tone designer where you can create your own tone, also session mode where you choose a scale you are going to jam with and you can choose what instruments are going to follow you and when you start playing, the game picks up what you are doing and then the other instruments start following and start playing with you. I think rocksmith is an amazing tool for learning. One thing that Rocksmith can’t teach you is THE FEEL. I often found myself playing a song and hitting the right notes but it just sounded lame because I was more focused on hitting the right notes instead on the feel of the song and the way it’s ment to be played, but overall I recommend this game to everyone

I feel like Rocksmith has saved me from quitting at times as well, right now I am playing a lot of Alkaline Trio songs. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to pull off those sweeps your speaking of, but I must agree Bat Country literally makes me want to get better every time I play it. For me that’s the song that keeps me going and constantly challenges me.
any suggestions on songs I should download to help my learning?

As a tool for learning songs it’s great, session mode is really cool for scale and improv practice, but I really can’t get behind guitarcade as a learning tool. Some games are better than others but I think for beginners the games increase in speed to fast, and along with the occasional note detection issues, the games become an excercise in frustration rather than excercises to assist your learning.
I would like to see technique excercises, possibly with videos like the games basic tutorials (similar to what you see here), that gradually increase in complexity. Even if they made these DLC and had lesson packs you could purchase like an economy picking lesson pack or one for sweeps.
@josh, I would suggest trying as many songs as possibe, particularly those that are in styles you normally don’t play. You will not only find a few gems that are really fun to play but a few that will really challenge you.
How many here have the game? It may be fun to set up weekly/fortnightly score attack challenges. Pick a random song each cycle, you practice and play it on your prefered difficulty (lead, rhythm or bass) and post a screenshot of your best score here.

GET ROCKSMITH!!!!!! I tried learning with a teacher, I’ve tried learning online but Rocksmith is the reason why I am still a guitar/ Bass player. You learn at your own pace. It gives you instant feedback (although I don’t agree w/ it always). I learned stuff SUPER fast and when I did the solo for Seasons of the Abyss by Slayer or parts of Painkiller by Judas Priest that was one of the best moments of my musical life. Rocksmith was by far the best and experts like Marty Schwartz (Guitar Jamz), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), Brendon Small (Dethklok and Metalopocolypse) and Jim Rosenberg (President of Epiphone guitars) and many more all can say it is a great tool. Furthermore a study out of UCLA gave the program to people said use it for 60 days and ~ 95% of them showed increased technique, fluency and confidence.
Drawback: It doesn’t really teach you theory. In session mode it will mention things about beat and what the modes do but its only once and you cant go back so its not that helpful. But in session mode you can practice embellishments and experimentations in a scale box or have it show you the whole neck.
Ultimate point: I use Rocksmith to practice songs and when Im done I see how far I can go w/o the notes (you can play to the bands tone) and I use this school for theory, guidelines and support so Rocksmith + this school = a really effective system HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I currently use the custom downloaded material through my Mac with rocksmith and I’m positive that someone with more knowledge of developing could make that happen. Also I’d love to do a score attack or some kind of challenge sometime. If you ever go through with it please make me aware, also I’m relatively terrible when it comes to playing so it would be an enjoyable experience for all to see.

@josh I have it on Xbox 1 (BIG MISTAKE ID DO IT ON PC IF I HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER) but I want to get it on steam so is the Customsforge actually accurate? I just watch them on youTube and try to mimic on my amp or the guitar next to me lol

@john i have had it for the xbox as well, and yeah i feel you there that it was a mistake, but yeah customsforge is legitimate. I have probably 100 songs on mine now. There are some things that are problematic, for example some developers are not as thorough as others and some are specifically solos, but for them most part the forum is fantastic. I am a firm believer, I am not able to pull off creating my own downloads as of yet. Customsforge songs are likely more spot on tho if I were to guess. Im illiterate so if your at all computer savvy you’ll be able to figure out how to do it.

I own it and I like using it for practice. I’m not a fan of any of the tones, even in the tone designer, but that’s me being nitpicky. Also note detection isn’t super accurate all the time and that can sometimes get annoying. But for learning the songs built in as well as content from Customsforge it’s a great tool. Guitarcade is very eh, but session mode and learn a song are great tools.

@Noah I 100% agree on note tracking but the tones I think are ok but not much to go off on in trying to replicate on an actual setup. Guitarcade Im also eh.. Its good to reinforce technique but ultimately your playing a videogame with the guitar as the controller and it gets really fussy with tracking. Overall I like it.
@josh and Filip I would’ve gotten it for PC but I had the original on Xbox 360 and kept it in the family. Also I swore a long time ago that I wouldn’t become a PC gamer for 1 very important reason, I will NOT get anything productive done. But this is really tempting me cuz I learned the Game of Thrones theme by watching youTube vids of the customs forge.

@john yeah the tones are certainly more than functional, I’m just a bit of an accidental tone snob so I’m really picky about little nuances. But the in-song tones are great, Tone Designer just ends up giving me a headache more often than not…so I usually just use a tone that I like from a song
