Just For Fun – Six Magic Notes For Soloing – Lesson 10
Papa Gates in this lesson plays the string 3 free (0) ((its a G)), then plays the string 4 in box 2 (its a E)).
how does Pope Gates make rope 3 stop sounding? I can not see how he did it.

There’s an art to muting the strings you’re not using, and making it second nature (part of the unconscious mechanics of your playing). For higher/thinner strings, you can use the flesh of your fretting fingers. In this case, the #1/pointer finger can gently touch the G string to dampen it when you use it to play the E on the #4/D string.
The picking hand palm can also be articulated to assist with muting as well. Find your best comfort areas when practicing slowly, and incorporate them into your mechanics with EVERYTHING you do, and eventually, you won’t even have to think about it – you’ll just “auto-mute” what you don’t want playing. This will come in handy when you get to sweeps!

Like it wa ssaid above, use whatever fingers you have free to lightly touch the strings that you don’t want to ring out. You can also use your right hand to mute the lower strings, in some cases.
But what it comes down to is just playing. Just try to be constantly aware of strings ringing out when they shouldn’t, and when you hear noise, try to solve it. It really helps using an amp and very high gain, so that the slightest noise will be heard. No one is going to be able to tell you exactly how to do it though, they can give you the tools, but you have to put in the time 😀
