Community! I need your help!
I’ve been trying to get my head around the legato run in the Afterlife solo and I just can’t figure it out! I’ve seen countless tabs and covers/tutorials on YouTube etc and none of them seem to have it 100% based on what is played in the video below:

Has anyone had success in learning this run based on the video? I’ve slowed the YouTube vid and downloaded Capo pro and even at 25% speed I can’t distinguish the individual notes! And this is with the isolated lead guitar track! My ear is terrible

You don’t have a bad ear don’t worry its just really fast I don’t really know I always tried to figure out the creeping death solo and that fast run in that song, if you haven’t check out this one guy named Chris I think.

Can you give the time stamp of what part you’re talking about exactly? I have a pretty good ear and a program I can slow stuff down with. And because his sound is so prominent and I can see his positions I may be able to help.

I can play the very beginning of the solo almost to full speed. That’s it though. You just really have to study a tab for it buckle down and start EXTREMELY slow. Then work up speed. Yeah Chris Zoupa on YouTube breaks it down well. If you want I can show you how the beginning of it goes in a video and we can break it down peice by peace

I think it’s safe to say that most of the tabs for it are somewhat accurate, they just don’t seem like it cause syn is playing it so freakin fast lol

Thank you for all your assistance on this one!
@Bartosz I’ve tended to stay clear of Hal Leonard stuff just because I’ve heard that some of the solo stuff isn’t always 100% accurate. I guess it’s still a great starting point though!
@jak then run starts 8 seconds in and lasts for 2 whole seconds! Somehow Syn manages to fit in 1000 notes in that quick moment lol!

Omfg lol! Yeah I know right? I’ll try to figure it out. You should post your video of you playing what you think he’s doing and someone else may see it too and can help!

I think the reason why it’s very difficult to figure out is because the rhythm of it is absolutely insane. There are a bunch of 32nd notes into 16th notes and then it sounds like a sixteenth note triplet somewhere in there. Not to mention he slides up a lot super quick from what it seems like. I’ll try to see if I can’t figure it out. But there is no way in hell I’m going to be able to play it that fast LOL! You may actually have your notes right. It may be more of a rhythmic timing thing. And unfortunately when we slow our things down below 40% it starts to sound really warped and very difficult on the ear to hear.

I think the tab I used on songsterr had it pretty close.
I don’t know of its just me though but I sometimes try not to learn things note for note. I think learning things by ear is important, it allows you to develop your own style. As amazing as syn is I don’t want to become a carbon copy of him or anyone else for that matter. Try to learn it the best you can but don’t worry if it’s not exact, add in some of your own embellishments, add some of your own crazy slides in the middle of the legato. Develop your own style and you’ll stand out from the rest.

I hadn’t even considered Rocksmith!
I’ll try learn this monster and hopefully come back with a cover or something! (perhaps in 3 months time! xD)

@ian kinda chiming in late. But I used Rocksmith to learn the guitar extensively and dude it really works. Also theres an A7X DLC with Afterlife in it. I trust it because Ubisoft needs to contact them for copyright stuff and permissions. Then they use the tabs that the artist used in the studio.
In the video: Syn like any other artist plays variations of it they are usually NEVER the same. Same essence but different approach. I usually slow it down in my head and count the intervals and if I know a ballpark where its being done then I can practice my ear training. Use this as an opportunity its hard and tedious but it will be SO WORTH it later.
