Thumb position behind the neck of the guitar

I have been playing guitar with my thumb placed behind the neck of the guitar all the time. I only place my thumb above the guitar when string bending. I’ve noticed plenty of guitar players (including Syn) play with their thumb above the neck of the guitar when playing on the high strings. Is this a bad habit I have developed that I need to undo? Should I be placing my thumb above the neck of guitar when playing on the b or the high e string, or does it not matter?

In my opinion it really is what feels more natural for you. I guess having the thumb behind the neck makes it easier to move the hand in any direction as quickly as possible. Having the thumb above the guitar can help muting the low e and give you a more steady grip. But you can see players playing using only one of the options all the time so it is up to you to find your way. The best players will always use what works for them in the situation they are in.

It’s extremely common in rock music!..any music for that matter, except the guys who are classically trained..they don’t count though! Lol “If it’s not broken..don’t fix it!” Hah as I grow older (I’m 31) my wrists get crappier..I blame 18 years of guitar and who knows how many years of computer keyboards..but I make a conscious effort when practicing shreddy kruger type licks to make sure my thumb climbs over..it keeps my wrist in a more natural straight position, instead of the more unnatural wrist bent position that comes with the thumb being somewhere in the middle. Sometimes it’s absolutely necessary to do the thumb behind the neck though…especially Mr. Legato type stuff..you gain more control and a tad more strength that way. Listen to everyone else…just do what feels good to you!! I always say…there’s no real rules when it comes to guitar…just general guidelines!! WHOOO!!
