When it’s memorable, simple as that. It can be just a simple chord progression, or a complex pattern, but as long as it’s catchy and headbang-able, it makes it a great riff.
It’s all pretty subjective. Depends on what your personal preference is, but it all boils down to what Daniel said. If you listen to a great riff and it sticks in your head, then that’s a good riff.
I agree, it has to stick in your head. Then I differ between two kinds of riffs personally. One, riffs that are so geniously simple and yet heavy and memorable or very melodic ones that just go in your head like song lyrics.
