Ed, YES, this can be a daunting topic and usually is but yields great value imho when time is taken to understand your favorite(and your favorite’s favorite sometimes more importantly)music.
Great ear my friend, I listen to mainly piano. I don’t know why I’m so drawn to the instrument over others but it captivates me. Chopin, Debussy, and Art Tatum have been paramount in my playing for the last decade and when I was young and listened to mainly guitar players, I feel like my favorites especially in Jazz and Blues listened to horn players mainly to give their playing a deep sense of phrasing. Robben Ford and Allan Holdsworth phrase like no other.
For feel, Dimebag had the best vibrato and command of the instrument I have ever heard. Truly one with the instrument.
Dan, theres a little known secret of pentatonic that I have been obsessed with for close to 10 years now which is called the 3-1-3 method which incorporates economy and sweep picking with your pent playing. This will blow minds I promise! I’m going to be doing my next Études section on this. It’s a bit of a stretch on the fretting hand but with some practice, your pentatonic playing will be faster than anyone not applying this method. Maybe someone can find something on Ytube, I’ve looked and don’t see this method exactly, only 3 note per string pents which are great but definitely not this. I’ll try to get this out ASAP!

Can I take a moment to call out just how amazing and unique this is? I mean, you’re not going to get into stuff like this with Syn at a meet and greet, and interviews don’t get this personal. The closest thing I’ve seen to this sort of thing was the Artist Session I sat down for with Mark Tremonti a few years ago – it was just me and one other guy sitting down playing guitar with Mark for what turned out to be almost 2 hours. It was a great lesson, and he kept yelling at me for wrapping my thumb on legato stuff (still working on that).
But that was $250, and if I forgot to ask a question during the session, oh well.
@syn is HERE and so is his Dad, watching our videos, answering our GUITAR questions, providing like 150 solid beginner-to-expert lessons. And he’s doing it all out of the goodness of his heart and genuine desire to propagate love of music and guitar. How OUTSTANDING is that?
PS: My son, after years of living at home and having no interest, came across a guitar on his US Marine base and decided he wanted to play. I turned him here, and also exchange snapchats and video texts with him to help him get going. He’ll intro himself if he feels ready, but I loved that there was a place I could send him that could teach him better than I could have. Thanks again, Syn and @Papa.

@Ed, It is a really great community, and I dont think many (If not ANY) musicians offer this kind of opportunity for us to be able to share our videos and give each other constructive and honest criticism. I can’t wait to see how it all progresses and moves forward. Thanks again PG and Syn, and also thanks to everyone who makes the community what it is.

@Ids, Mark was a stickler that for certain techniques (legato being one of them) proper technique was essential for maximum cleanliness and effectiveness. He was really big on scale work – legato or picked – should be with the thumb center-back or slightly-off-center of the back of the neck, rather than wrapped over the type, as is typical for bendy, bluesy, riffy stuff.

I was gonna refrain from posting this but I can’t help myself

I did check out that lesson and I do really like it. I don’t really apply it in my blues but I try to apply in the other stuff I use pentatonic for (which to be honest isn’t really a lot)

I was all ready to say, “My short, fat sausage fingers can’t do the 3-1-3 stuff,” but I looked at the tab and, while it hurts a bit right now, I can do the 7-10-12 reach in the first part of the tab. With effort and daily stretching, it’s within reach. I look forward to getting to that lesson. Learning CAGED and boning up on alt picking first.

Thanks Jen I totally forgot about that lol!
There are a billion patterns that really open up your playing.
It really sucks that we are barely scratching the surface of some of these topics. It’s the beautiful irony of music, theres so much amazing shit to learn but dammit, theres soooo much amazing shit to learn!
Thank you all so much for helping each other and in turn, helping me to know what needs to get done! I am on this!

I would just like to say a huge thanks for all the help with the subject, It just goes to show how strong the community is and how even though there are so many people on the site it is tailored to each person and we can all receive guidance. I cant talk highly enough about this site and I look forward to seeing how everyone progresses!
