What to play over this progression?

I've been playing these chords for a while now, but I still haven't found what to play over it.

Dm9, Em7, D9Sus2, Em7, Dm7

I play the last Em and Dm in the Am shape, the first Em7 in the 'jimi hendrix' shape.

Try E phrygian(notes of C major). D9sus2 is weird btw. I would call it a D7sus2(2 and 9 of D are both an E)

I thought that was weird too. I believed I played an Am6, but I looked it up with a chord identifier and this is what came up.

D9 can be a substitution of Am6

Are you strumming the chords like.. on their own or do they blend In together? If you're strumming for a few seconds before going to the next you're possibilities are endless.you could follow the chords that way and change for each chord.

Or do what ids said find a scale that fits all the chords. It's a hard question without hearing the peogressionn

Lindsay ids changed his scale after you posted.. I'm not sure why he did that but it may have been a better scale sub then d Dorian. Might wanna take a peak.

Its the same notes so not a lot changes really. It's just that if the D chords are substitutions of Am6 it could be that it resolves back to E instead of to D. It could also be that it resolves back to Am6 and then it is more of a Aeolian thing.

I've been playing that over it too. After finding D dorian I played it in all positions/modes. I stuck with D dorian, E phrygian and A minor.

I guess I've played it in a very basic jazz standard style. I'll look into chordtones too

Yeah I guess once you connect the dots you realize the notes are the same.. a lot of times I dont realize how similar the notes are in some chords until i play it out. The only one i know for sure are my relative minors. The others I havent gotte to that point where I use 4 chords that share notes. Or more.
